I doubt that Microsoft XBOX 360 will not last ten years. Although, IMO this ten year life cycle thing Sony is doing does has flaws though.
-Look at the end of the SNES generation for instance. SNES was doing so good that they definitely could have lasted much longer than what they have been, BUT due to the SNES beating the Genesis, SEGA launched its next console (Saturn if I'm not mistaking) which was powerful than the SNES and Sony came in with the PS (also stronger than the SNES). Even though SNES was the best console of that time, when the next consoles came out, that threw Nintendo in a little binder that caused them to release a product (N64) that obviously wasn't ready yet.
The N64 was released late due to the new generation and as a result Nintendo lost alot of ground to the other two. Even though the N64 was the stronger console that generation, the other consoles had greater advantages that did the N64 dirty.
So basically when this generation is done (5 years or whatever) newer consoles will enter the market, delivering newer and much advanced technologies pretty much leaving the PS3 in the dust making it obsolete.
- What if there is a much more reliable and more efficient video format in 5 or years time? What will happen to the PS3 then?
-When the 360 and Wii gets upgraded early and the PS3 is still doing the 10 year thing. Will it be so bad that the PS3 will look like the Wii to the PS3 in terms of graphics.
-Graphics and sound can only go so far, which is one of the reasons why the Wii took a different approach this time around. When the PS3 is still doing the 10 year deal and all it's doing is the same thing, little by little, it has been doing since it launched; the next Microsoft console could take a different approach and then the PS3 will really be in trouble.
-The ten year deal has paid off for Sony in the past but it can backfire. How? Does anyone here think that the PS2 is holding the PS3 back? Could the PS3 have more sales than it has now without the PS2 taking potential sales from the PS3? The PS2 was a phenomenal success, (we all can agree on that right?) so why continue something that is limiting what the PS3 is trying to accomplish. As long as the PS2 is still active, there is no reason to purchase a PS3 or any console for that matter as the PS2 has the best overall value you can get right now and that's better than any console that's out right now.
.....OK, I think I'm done.
Generation 8 Predictions so far.....(as of 9/2013)
