You do realize that Sony had to license LCD tech from Samsung right....

If Toshiba knew the outcome back then, they would have included HD DVD in the 360 without boosting the price by much or any, and take the loss to win the format war, just like Sony is doing. But unlike Sony, Toshiba never lost a huge format war and thus, they couldn't play the trojan game like Sony did on the PS3.
360 would have been very expensive and sales would have been very slow
| Sansui said: Hard to say.... Back when Fox and Warner were just about ready to side with HD DVD, Sony paid off Fox with 120 million to go blu ray. Warner followed suit and got 400 million in payouts. If MS's console had been vested in HDDVD, maybe there would have been significant counteroffers, or maybe with the year headstart of the xbox, the install base would have tipped the other companies earlier. |
hmmm i see now why the ps3 is running out of exclusive games, =)

This is a complete and utter lie. |
I don't think it's farfetched at all to think Fox was going to get bought over to the side of HD DVD, and Sony bid higher to stay with Blu ray. These things happen
But I did some looking yesterday, and all this info is 6 months old... couldn't find confirmation that it was true, nor could I find confirmation that it was false. At least I linked where I saw my news, maybe you could do us a favor and show us who proved that it's false. I don't care about the details of who paid off who, but it would be nice to know the real answer if there is a definitive one out there, whether true or false

Yep, HD-DVD would probably have won. PS3 is the only reason Blu-Ray won.
If Blu-Ray was not in PS3 then HD DVD would have won. Do we agree?

Whoah, wasn't expecting to get these defensive replies from people... thought it was common knowledge, just like the Paramount deal you so kindly linked :P http://gizmodo.com/344680/the-real-reason-warner-went-blu+ray |
I was expecting you to post a link to a forum in neogaf. The link you posted is marginally better. People may sound defensive when they are responding to unproven rumors such as yours.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.
| Vaza said: Do you reckon HD-DVD would have won the format war if the XBOX 360 had it built in (like Sony did for the PS3)? If not, give reasons and if yes, explain. I think that it may have had an excellent chance, the price would've been high yet still slightly lower than the PS3 at launch (HD-DVD was the cheaper of the two early in the war). The one year head start would give serious problems to the PS3 (the main reason for blu-rays victory) then as there would already be a fairly well established format which would cause doubt among consumers who would then choose the more popular format (at this point would be HD-DVD). It may not have changed the outcome because of the movie publishers not choosing HD-DVD and would also lowered 360's head start sales because of the high price. BTW: I am a blu-ray supporter (always have been, ever since the PS3 was announced with it, as I used to be a Sony fanboy, now a 360 fanboy and proud). |
