Impulsivity said: The Wii will, in the short term, have the most consoles for a good while, at least a few years until the PS3 drops to a low PS2 like price (199ish). |
Thus, the problem of the Sony fanboy. PS3 will likely never see $199. Production efficiency is easy at first and then becomes quite difficult. So you generally see large price drops on products for the first couple of years followed by smaller price drops later. So, you expect that the $100 price drop the PS3 got in it's first year to carry over each year after that. And that is extremely unlikley.
What we know if Sony has to at least get to break even at somepoint in the PS3 lifetime on console sales so they can profit through the software sales instead of cut into the losses of the PS3. Early estimates pegged the PS3 as costing $800 initially. It still has to cost at least $475 for the 40 gig due to the huge losses in the last Sony financials. If Microsoft/Sony is aggressive with pricing, this is the absolute quickest that it will drop.
All time periods Christmas
2008 - $349 for 40 gig
2009 - $300 for 40 gig
2010 - $250 for 40 gig
2011 - $200 for 40 gig
This is 5 years after the 360 launch. So Microsoft will most likely have the 720 out. And I highly doubt that Sony or Microsoft will drop price this year (since the Pro is a replacement drop) which means that everything will get pushed back one year. Six years into the consoles life, people have already decided that it is dead. Look at the Gamecube. I mean I saw it on sale for $50 at the end of its life. But people still didn't care because all of the perceived problems that it had. I mean Sony has sure had its share with the PS3.
