Why be the next PS2 when you can be the next NES?

PS2 grew Sony's market share but didn't grow their profits or their influence on the industry. Its trojan horse living room takeover plan was a failure. From a historical viewpoint, it didn't do anything the PS1 hadn't already done, except sell more units and reach a higher marketshare.

We only pretend NES had PS2-like marketshare. The Commodore 64 sold 30M units. It's heyday was before the NES, but it shows you how big the computer gaming market was at the time. But NES created massive growth and profits for Nintendo and remade the gaming market in it's image.

I'll let you figure out how this relates to Wii.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
