What both groups have in common is that they play a lot of games, gaming is their favorite pastime. The difference is that they look for different values in games. The hardcore gamer wants graphics, realism and "maturity" in his games, while the core gamer is looking for new gaming experiences and doesn't care too much about how a game looks. @HappySqurriel: That's already the second hilarious analogy you posted today. Keep doing that. |
Then I'm not considering myself a hardcore gamer anymore. I'm a core gamer. Oh and then where do the casuals fit in?
@Ail Your right, because the wii gets core games.
@KoW What are you talking about Tales of Symphonia 2 sold almost the same as the original. Also it will probably outsell most hardcore games on the ps3 in its lifetime.
@Pristine I beleive chocobo dungeon originated on the ps1.

True, but you must consider something; DS takes a step forward over GBA with vastly superior visuals, new buttons, AND adds a second screen and a touch screen. I view the Wii as a sidestep Nintendo had to take to dodge being marginalized... so while it was important for surival, this step sideways doesn't really offer anything superior to GC, just different. GC controls are taken away and are replace with simplified Wii Remote and Nunchuk, BUT motion controls are added. Unlike DS, this is but, not and. Also, graphics are better, but nothing incredilbe like GBA to DS; its more like the jump between GC and Xbox. So will the Wii really be the same? Many great DS games offer button pressing for parts of games and stlus conrol for other parts. I doubt Wii games will ever have us plauggin in our GC/classic controllers for segments of the game that work better traditional controls. The tradiitonal controls the Wii Remote and nunchuk offer are gimped. |
We disagree quite vehemently, then. I don't for a second think the Wii was a sidestep, or that anything about it was not very carefully planned, tested, and examined by Nintendo. The DS was the risk: the Wii was a guaranteed success.
But we're drifting slightly. To address your primary concern, it is true that the graphical leap between the Wii and the GCN aren't as drastic as that between the GBA and the DS, but as I don't think that matters to most gamers, save for the most die-hard graphics lovers. The Wii can do things plenty-good on the graphical department. Hell, the Gamecube was already fantastic on that front. I'll grant you that the snobcore might demand more graphics, but the vast majority of us are fine with what we've got.
As to controls, I contest your claim there too. Traditional games can all be played perfectly fine with the wiimote and nunchuk combo. They offer more than enough easily accessible buttons (A, B, +, -, three directions, Z, C, and the joystick), PLUS motion controls. If a developer needs more input mehtods than that, then he needs to rethink what he's doing. Let me offer you some examples: I play and prefer Brawl and Mario Kart with the wiimote/nunchuk, despite those offering Gamecube controller support, and I know I'm not alone.
But even if that was not the case, I don't think it'll prove as fatal as you think. Again, the beauty of the Wii and the DS is that they offer new ways to play games. Corruption was fun to fight in, Galaxy was great with its controls, Trauma Center couldn't be done on other consoles, etc. etc. In fact, as time goes on I begin to think that the dual analogue controller is the one that's gimped, not the wiimote. I can do so much more with the Wii's controller than I can with any other, especially in the genres the HD consoles excel in (sandbox and FPS).

Wait, how are most of those games considered mature (I'm referring to the games you replied to in a later post)? A mature game IMO is something that plays well and people of all ages can enjoy. A childish game is a game made for teens....

Nah dude, you're just a gamer. Period. What you're not is a snobcore, or a prick.

LOL games from all 3 systems are easier then their 16 and 8 bit counterparts... Hardcore is oldschool people!

it sold close to 180K first week (the one on GC did), and 40K+ second week. Wii has close to 3 times the install base than GC had at the point. Selling LESS means there's potentially no gain of hardcore gamer from GC days.
as for most hardcore games on PS3... well, it might not sell over 300K, so let's see. it really depends on what you mean by "most".

I tried to make it as obvious as possible, but now that I have to explain the joke, it isn't funny anymore.
Hardcore - core = Hard.
Hardcore without core makes the word hard. I was saying that since he said "difference" and that is also a mathematical term.

Which nintendo wasn't trying to do. They were trying to expand the nongamers. Also I think we should wait and see what the game does lifetime before saying it sold bad. So I think your argument is pretty poor to show that core games don't sell on the wii. ANd according to vgchartz TOS2 sold 160k 20 less than the original. Oh and when I say most I mean more than half.
