Forums - Sony - Mirrors Edge : PS3 Cell lets DICE push texture res "much higher"

Deneidez said:

Urgh, that would be the case with this thread. But wasn't this nearly offtopic about creating procedural textures on the fly using CELL.

If you were talking strictly PS3 texture generation it could be taken off topic by doing comparisons.  The point of his marketing speak though is to compare it to something else, so the mood of the thread was set early.  Anyway, It's not like it matters yet.  When the game is realized, then we can compare notes.

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

So my question for you is "Can you tell me how would you do this miracle of yours on limited hardware like PS3.". Go as deep as you like, I am quite sure that I will understand.

Tell me about bandwidth advantages and texture memory requirements.

Apart from the smaller file sizes to stream, rendering on the fly. Read the following article and share your analysis.

This game looks great, it's nice to see a FP(S?) with some nice, vibrant colors instead of everything looking all dingy and brown / grey. This game seems to be like PoP but from First Person, I hope it turns out well.

Omg, the PS3 is really the best gaming machine ever created!

Don't read anything below this, if you don't want to be disappointed. :/

---

First of all, those all are demoed on pc as you can clearly see theres fraps text in one of the vids. Secondly thats nothing that even X360s GPU/CPU can't do. Actually it would be bless to use procedural textures with X360 because of limits of DVD. (I really wonder why they don't use those already. I mean 'offline' procedural textures.)

How many games use that already? How many games will use that? I am quite sure that not too many as I have seen this arrogance from side of PS3 developers not to use even compressed files in PS3 games.

Also that HD thing made me laugh, because we all know how many HD games(native) there are on PS3. Well, it is capable of making HD resolutions, but if game is even a bit complicated it will render fps way too low on HD resolutions.

Last thing about the article, this comment made me laugh as well you can see clearly that those demos were running on pc.

"Only possible on PS3."

Btw, do you really believe all that fud or are you just playing around with us?

[confession]

Btw, if you ask me on which 'side' I am the answer is neither. I just can't take all that fud and neither can many other. This PS3 fanboyism is like a religion and its getting even more annoying than real religions.

[/confession]

I see a few angry 360 lovers.

I can't wait until dev's fully get a grapse on what the cell can do and start pushing out some major software.

In terms of system specs the by far most powerful for sure. But I can imagine the PS2 or Wii being more suitable for many.

Secondly thats nothing that even X360s GPU/CPU can't do.

Like I said above, the 360 can do procedural synthesis, but is far less powerful to do so.

Actually it would be bless to use procedural textures with X360 because of limits of DVD. (I really wonder why they don't use those already. I mean 'offline' procedural textures.)

It's more difficult, requires more effort from artistically talented coders. Like I said it's not the end all be all solution. Hand drawn images often provide better end results.

How many games will use that? I am quite sure that not too many as I have seen this arrogance from side of PS3 developers not to use even compressed files in PS3 games.

Games will make more and more use of procedural synthesis in general. It takes time and effort. Rome wasn't build in a day.

And yes PS3 developers are compressing their files, simply because decompression takes less time than loading times straight from disc. If you are referring to audio, they often don't do this because they can (available space on Blu-Ray disc). Audio data can be streamed fast enough from disc for optimal results.

Well, it is capable of making HD resolutions, but if game is even a bit complicated it will render fps way too low on HD resolutions.

Gan Turismo 5: Prologue, Super Stardust HD, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, all good and impressive 60 FPS examples.

After the release of Resistance 2 and Killzone 2, I think those who will still claim the 360 to be more powerful will be laughed at...

I think its the PS3 fanboy mentality that angers people.. just like you mentioned, major software (other then MGS4) hasn't been pushed out.. yet PS3 dominaton and superiority gets preached daily on these forums.

The other known big titles will come too eventually.

Actually I have seen mostly 360 fanboys praising the 360's sales and pulling the PS3 figures through the dirt despite the PS3 sells faster taking equal time frames at a much higher entry pricing and the most anticipated titles yet to come.

With regard to technical superiority, it's widely understood the PS3 is more powerful and more reliable. It's mostly the 360 fanboys who seem to make a lot of noise once a 360 to PS3 port ends up into very minor differences.

PS3 vs 360 sales

I just saw a movie of the gameplay, didn't see nothing special in terms of graphics. Unreal Engine 3 can do much better.

In the end both games will look the same, maybe the colors look better on 360, maybe the light looks better on the PS3, but it's all the same.

-PS3 uses Cell to backup is GPU
-360 uses GPU and memory

Results are the same.

Note: For the ones saying 360 is olding games I ask "what did old MGS4, Uncharted and others game from looking better? They look just like other 360 games"

By the end of this generation in 2011 we will have:

18.890.000 + (174 x 120.000) = 39.770.000 for XBOX360
12.610.000 + (174 x 170.000) = 42.190.000 for PS3

oh yes, make it seem like PS owners don't do the same.

And a "you can't be serious" for the second paragraph.
