PC (I'm not the most familiar person with PC gaming so someone can add to this if I missed anything)

Half-Life
StarCraft
Grim Fandango
Rainbow Six

Thief: The Deadly Project
Baldur's Gate
Fallout 2
Raiload Tycoon II
Unreal
Might and Magic VI

Game Boy/Game Boy Color (I can't find a list of GBC/GB games from 1998, so anyone else please add on)

Pokemon Red/Blue

Arcade (Yup arcades were still pumping out awesomeness back then)

The House of the Dead 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Dance Dance Revolution

I don't see how this year could be better than 1998. Most of the best from this year are just sequels of the games from 1998. Look at how many oiginal titles there wee back then and now look at how many are simply evolutionary sequels. 1998 wins!

I added a couple more bold* for fantastic, legendary games for the PC and GTA because you know what that spawned.

Hmm I think 1998 has it beat, but it depends on how some of the New Ips and old turn out.

Tease.

1998 was better, and I don't think this is the best year either.

I think I liked 2006 better...or 2007....or 2004...

Top 3 favorite games: Super Mario Galaxy, The Sims 2 (PC), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

1998 Win, the original Pokemon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything else

Ok it was 98 for sure. It introduced new revolutionary gaming series and revolutionized some old ones. 98 FTW!

If StarCraft II gets released this year then yes for sure. That along with Spore and WoW: Wrath of the Lich King could pull this year alone to be the top year for gaming yet. And theres still tons of other great games as well.

P.S. 500th post!

PC Gamer

1998 looks pretty solid. This year would need SC2, FF13, GoW3, etc.

But, add GoW:CoO and FF:CC along with Patapon and others for the best year for PSP, at least. FFT. Good gosh, looking over that 1998 list again...DDR and MGS. That's a serious year. MGS4 wouldn't exist without MGS1, but they at least cancel. It's going to be awhile before we can judge current years against 1998, but it would be very hard to say any year is better than that for quite some time.

Nah, because SC2 won't top the original in significance. Conan is a bigger deal this year than Lich King, just because WoW can't really get more popular. I'll give you Spore, perhaps, but 1998's Halflife beats that. 1998 looks ridiculously stacked. Baldur's Gate changed my life.

Nothing will ever beat this.  This is absolutely incredible.  Half Life, Zelda, and Pokemon, Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, Starcraft, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2.  All of these games are either incredible new franchises or are the best in their respective franchises.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Hell, even Turok 2 was a great game. Certainly better than this year's. It's funny how many 1998 games are getting sequels this year. If only Dragon Age would make it this year (spiritual sequel to Baldur's Gate).
