Forums - Nintendo - why companies arent considering nintendo direct competition?

Because this is the first time in history where the two losing consoles are getting tons of games that the leading console isn't, especially when these games were on the leading console's predecessor, even if multiplatform (Beyond Good and Evil 2 seems to be a good example of this).

Ah, but even comparing the games the other consoles are getting, to the games the Wii is getting, is basically proving they are competing with each other. If their libraries are competing with each other, then gamers for said libraries are choosing.

I wish to hell the Wii wasn't competing with the PS360, so I didn't have to hear all the time about their libraries verses the Wii's when the use hardcore biased reviews from sites like gamerankings to judge those libraries.

Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft say they aren't competing.

I just wish to hell they and everyone would stop comparing themselves to each other.

Sad fact is, they can't, because those consoles are competing with each other for the same consumer dollar in many, many cases.

While Microsoft might be winning the software battle, it sure as hell is clear as day who is winning the actual war, and it is a war, weather Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft want it or not. Fanboys and biased journalist have seen to that.

As for the DS, it's actually winning in all categories verses the PSP with its game lineup, userbase, and SW/HW seller status. So, saying the PSP isn't competing with the DS isn't that much of a reach for Sony. Those consoles aren't exactly competing for the same dollar, since in reality the PSP is usually a second system for a DS owner, especially in Japan. The DS works as the gateway drug to sell the harder product.

It's like comparing marijuana and heroine. Heroine is a niche drug with a few too many drawbacks for the casual consumer.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

In my opinion This thing happens because third parties are too afraid to abandon sony and also too afraid to deny ms's money.
It is obvious that third parties are not capable to adapt on the new status or they insist in purpose as this new situation in hardware sales force them to think differently and maybe taking risks towards innovation. Third parties with the exception of some Japanish developers trully want the previous status where a console dominated the market and it had the ps brand on it. That way, they try less and earn more.
But if developers take seriously the developing on WII and do something new they will benefit a lot in the end. For example I can see Capcom and EA to sell millions in the next years if they follow their current strategy on WII with new, fresh and exclusive titles on WII.
Finally the whole thing will make competitors to explore new areas in videogames both in hardware and software and the customer will be the only winner.
Videogames has changed and maybe it is time for the developers, publishers to understand this.

It's a spin to make themselves feel better about their standing. When they were the leaders they were competing with Nintendo, now weren't they?

Its because they can't compete. Even when Ninty was "losing" with the GC generation - they were making heaps of money, primarily from their own software titles.

They have always been the #1 or #2 publisher in the world (trading spots with EA), but almost always more profitable than EA.

When doing competition comparisons, *everyone* ignores Nintendo directly. Its a bit like they are the industry - and people won't try to compete against that.

Because the quality of the best Nintendo games is not an achievable goal for any other existing company.

I rather have company's have those goals and fail, which results i still very decent games(no more heroes), then company's who just just bring out games for the money and not even try to match Nintendo's quality and effort.

Given that nintendo's quality is a almost impossible goal.

You might prefer that (as I would, and many others I am sure), but a company that doesn't worry about making money won't be around long enough to make anymore of those games.

Oh, and Nintendo is VERY concerned about making money, make no mistake.  They are a business, that is their number one goal.

true, but i never said it wasn't :)

They think they can get away with labeling the Wii as a "casual" console because of all of the cash-ins thrown into the library. I'm not really sure why they're doing this because there are plenty of games to attract hardcore gamers.

Because believe it or not, there is a portion of us HD console owners that really aren't that interested by the direction the Wii is going and by trying to follow it Sony or Microsoft would loose us with no guarantee of winning the Wii users..

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Sony and Microsoft are sore losers.. Ofcourse they are competing with Nintendo. People can't spend money twice and they are spending it on a wii... Some people say "But they target diferent audience " That's nonsence.. Wasn't the whole purpose of an al great multimedia machine that different audience would buy a console.. That's what Sony and Microsoft misjudged.. they tought that they would bring in a new audience with a multimedia machine.. they added something to a game console.. Nintendo reinvented the game console.. and that whats the new audience are buying.. A new entertainment experience..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

If the 360 was the top selling console on a weekly basis, would Microsoft consider the Wii a competitor? If the PSP had twice the market share of the DS, would Sony brag about how they were crushing the competition?

It is impossible to spin the Sony/Microsoft NPD or worldwide hardware numbers in a positive way without excluding Nintendo. Thus, they want to ignore them.

Sony and Microsoft's PR claims not to be in competition against Nintendo's platforms, except on the rare occasions when they're able to surpass a Nintendo platform in some way ...
