Forums - Gaming Discussion - Myth of Metal Gear Solid 4 being too much for xbox 360 to handle...

First of all let me say that I absolutly love Metal Gear 4. The game is succeding in tying up the stroy of 3 previous games as well as delivering some a few new and interesting gameplay segments. So I don't mean to undervalue metal gear when I say this...

However there is nothing in this game that xbox360 can't handle. Below are 2 of the main reasons people say this cant be ported to 360 (other than contracts Sony may have with Konami ofcourse)

1. Size

Everyone says that if it be ported, it would have to be on 7-8 DL DVD disks. While no one has yet confirmed if mgs4 is dual layer bluray or sigle layer (25 gigs or 50 gigs...4 xbox disks or 8 xbox disks)...lets take that it is infact a 50 GB bluray game...

One must remember that the majority of metal gears size are the cutscences...gameplay alone could easily fit on to 1 DVD and have room left over. Therefore, we must remember that new compression codecs such as x264 are completely embarrassing Blu-ray video and sound. x264 takes a full Blu-ray film in HD, and compresses it to around 2-3GB. With same quality almost (95%). Same could be applied to the games cutscens bringing the game down to 2 or 3 DL DVD's maximum

Also, the fact is that MGS4 does game installs from 2 to 4 minutes between EVER ACT! So you can just stare at the wall for 3 minutes, or you can get up and swap the disk 2-3 times while playing the whole game (if this came out to 360).

So size is not the issue...

2. Visuals

I have not seen ANYTHING visually that makes MGS4 imposible to port to 360. Once cutscenes are taken out of the picture(which look amazing but are not hard to port), there really isn't anything in mgs4 that makes this game stand out visually from other top level visual games on the 360.

None of the structures take damage (other than that Raven boss which was designed specifically with that in mind) other than window and glass explosions, lighting doesn't adjust dynamically (there is shade and then there is sun...sun never moves), the bodes dissapear from the ground and there isn't many characters on screen at the same time...etc. These are the thigns that require lots of processing power... so visually it should not be a problem.

Therefore the only reasons this game can't come to the 360 are:

A) Kojima doesn't want to do it

B) Sony paid for complete exclusive

I agree with you 100%. People exaggerate the amount of discs it would take. I'm thinking more like 3 if it is kept 1080p. If they were to dumb it down to 720p, I would definitely say 2 discs maximum. If they were to port it to the 360 eventually, I think they'd go for 720p because I'm sure they had a lot of difficulties just getting the PS3 1080p...and just trying to make it 1080p would prolong the development. The next generation would be here before they got a 1080p port done. So for a fast quality port I think 720p would be good. 2 discs is perfectly fine.

I don't really think the installs are bad. It's nice to take a short break and go get a drink for me. Plus it really shortens the loading time that would otherwise have built up to around the install time, but to each his own I guess.

No need to dumb down anything, because the PS3 version of MGS4 already runs it in only 720p. It's just scaled up to 1080p.

And when did I ever say that it filled the disc? You're really not doing too well here. Please, grasp at some more straws.

The game was pushing the limits of a 25GB disk a few months before release, then they had a well timed publicity based stunt where they announced it would be on a dual-layer disk. The chances that this game is far above 25GB are minimal.

Another thing to consider when thinking about how big it would have to be on 360 is the fact that most Blu-Ray games (and I'm sure MGS4 is no exception) have the same data on a disk in multiple spaces to account for the Blu-Ray disks substantially slower maximum read/seek times.

On the 360, you would have no need for the doubling/tripling/quadrupling of the data.

I dont mind the cutscenes either. Lets you relax and absorb what you jsut saw.

I only hate it when i want to show something to a friend like a cool boss fight or a kick ass scene. then we have to wait to bounc between chapters...

Really? Did Konami announce the native resolution?

LOL. So what are you arguing then? That its a DL bluray that is not filled and hence can't go on a 360 with a little compression?

Seems like a dead end to me...

I wouldn't be surprised to see a 360 version eventually. Ports = profit, as everyone knows.

The why did you bring this comment

Umm, it's been confirmed for many months now that it's actually a 50gb dual-layer Blu-ray Disc and all of the cutscenes are generated in real-time by the game's engine. The audio is only available in standard Dolby Digital so you can't claim the space is wasted by uncompressed audio either.

Complete and utter FAIL.

THe OP cleary states how the game could be ported using a number of DVDs, the you put this comment to show him (I can't see any other purpose)how the game is really big impliying that it would take several DL-DVDs to make a port, is that wasn't your intention why would you posted it??, there is no need of grasp any straws, but if it wasn't your intention then your comments made almost no sense...

By me:

Made with Blender + LuxRender
"Since you can´t understand ... there is no point to taking you seriously."

compression wise the game is already being compresssed a bit. And the disc is almost completely filled. Kojima even said that he wanted to put the japanese voice acting on the american disc but the simply wasn't enough room. There are 9 hours of cutscenes. That right there needs to be significantly compressed.

It's not like a multi-disc 360 game is unprecedented, either. Look at the retarded way they packed Lost Odyssey into a barely-modified case. Man, that kind of thing pisses me off.

Uh, excuse the mostly unrelated tangent.

Bastards.  (<-- Microsoft)
