Forums - Sales Discussion - Metal Gear spikes PS3 sales - good sign or bad?

They need to make more MGS4 bundles...!

Around the Network

I think we'll see a big drop off in the long run, with a game like this you're exhausting alot of on-the-fence gamers who were waiting for a reason to buy one.

The fact they needed a bundle to pull this off too is kind of worrisome as well. Most new games aren't given a wheelchair to help them out into the market. All that remains now is to see if this actually allows Sony to usurp Nintendo for just one week, because if this game can't do it, then that's just a sad sign for the PS3.

GTAIV - checked off the list

MGS4 - getting the sharpe marker ready for the check

FFXIII - next on the list

Spikes or no; at least one of the most anticipated titles (platform exclusive) has actually made it out and is doing great!
It is not hard to imagine that FFXIII, GT 5 combo can do wonders along with MGS 4 and a few other very good titles for a longlasting hw sales boost.

So now PS3 sales going up is a bad thing? Hell, some of you probably wouldn't be happy unless Sony started giving the damn things to people.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Can we possibly bend this news any more to twist it into a negative?

A wheelchair? A 70k boost? The bundles made up a whole five percent of MGS4 sales. That's absolutely nothing. They could have sold any number of bundles that they'd made -- they didn't, but that's a poor management decision, not a "sad sign for the PS3."

PS3 selling 120k this week is a good thing. But 70k were the special editions that are now gone. So if you take away those people who special ordered them up front and were obviously waiting for their console, you are left with a pretty average week of 50k.

What possible justification is there to simply toss out those 70k consoles? There's nothing "invalid" about those sales. And the special editions aren't gone, the first shipment is. There are hundreds of thousands of people like me who couldn't find one on week 1. We'll keep buying just as fast as Sony lets us.

And 40gb sales are completely irrelevant. The 40gb sucks. It's a poor value compared to the MGS4 bundle, and it lacks a feature that many gamers consider essential. People aren't buying it because they're holding out for the 80gb. If the low-end bundle was just a pile of cow shit in a box and it sold poorly, would you be saying that's a bad sign for overall PS3 sales?

Any consoles sold is a good thing, it dont really matter why it is selling

I dunno a MGS has never been this hyped.

S0ny iz DOOMED!!/sarcasm

Honestly. The 80 gig sku has proven to be a better seller than the 40 gig.I predict, sales to grow larger each week from now on.

It's so sad that people lack the ability to just say "Good job Sony/Kojima".

It really is.

It sold extremely well, and all people can focus on is the negative, "It'll drop off next week," "sales will return to normal", etc. Rather than just giving them a compliment for doing an awesome job.

Sheesh.

People act like rain clouds and thunderstorms are all they can see all day. Let the sun shine in your life for once.

One this is being thought about too linear. Just because 70k were sold, does that mean the traditional 50k were still sold? Of course not. More than likely at least 50% of those people that bought the 70k probably would have bought the 50k. Meaning that 50k number dropped. More than likely it was about 90k sales this week, if we were plainly looking at it that way.

Secondly, I don't think you can argue with a spike in sales, but you can't look at it that linearly to coem to your conclusion. It just doesn't work like that.
