Forums - Gaming - On third party hostility against Nintendo

how about the simple fact that major 3rd party developers simply aren't coming up with ideas that are on the same level as nintendo? therefore get cold feet, send the work experience kids into bat for them and go back to making the type of games that they have made a living off for the last ten years?

So I'd like to hear your opinions, people. Why do you think that so many developers have been ignoring the pent-up demand? I have my own thoughts on the subject, but I'd like to hear from any of you who care to share first.

Kenny's first poitn nails this question.    Big games take 2-3 years of planing and development of which the Wii obviously hasn't been out that long.  Prior to Wii launch, most publishers wrote off the Wii completely put all resources behind X360/PS3.

Cobretti2 noted as I have before that E3 will provide the first opportunity for publishers to show what they've done since the popularity of Wii become evident.

I agree to some extent to your post.

However EVERYONE was thrown off guard. All nintendo said was trust us and start developing you won't regret it. Now I can understand why studios would not do so due to having like NO INFO about the system.

So my point being, i will reserve this judgement for AFTER E3. Developers have had at least a year now since the success of the Wii was seen so what better way then to show all this developement at E3?

I ain't saying they will or will not show us anything. But if anything BIG is gonna happen from 3rd party for Wii it will be at this years E3.

QFT. Only the delusional bashers think the Wii has no upcoming games, and Nintendo promised (can't remember the links) to show a lot, from them and 3rd parties, at E3.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Exactly. Because of that the Wii has seen so many shovelware, PS2/GC ports and minigame compilations. They are fast to develop. I would think that there are quite a few nice games in preproduction or development right now. But they won't come out for a while.

On the other hand I seriously doubt that quality Wii third-party support will ever be proportional to its userbase. Nintendo and casual games simply take the lions share of the software sales. I do not think that will ever change after all everybody always says that the Wii is a casual gaming revolution.

Well, I think that 3rd parties have ignored the core gamer on the Wii because the industry is more focused on using middleware than developing their own engines and tools. Since there is no version of the Unreal 3 engine for the Wii, a lot of 3rd parties simply neglect the Wii. They either do not have the time, skill, or resources to modify the engine to work for the Wii.

Also, developers and publishers thought that the Wii would be a distant 3rd this generation and set their budgets according to that belief. Now that the Wii is successful, publishers and developers do not have the resources to adequately fund and develop a AAA game for the Wii.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

Hmm, seems we're mostly in agreement then, although I'd like to add that if the Wii does continue to follow the same pattern as the DS when it comes to third parties ("What the f*** is this?" to "Let's try to use all of the system's features, even if it's gimmicky" to "I have a neat idea that only needs some of the system's stuff, so we really don't have to use the others") then this year's crop of third parties games will be neat, but the real treasures won't arise until next year.

I'd also add that I'll be very surprised if we don't see at least two new developers make a name for themselves in the industry because of the Wii, but that's off-topic, and completely random, now that I think about it...

Uh, a lurker is one who visits the site but hasn't necessarily made an account yet.

What's your point?  I am seeing 1,902 users online now, with 1,667 guests.

The great irony of any Rockstar antipathy for the Wii is that (1) It has tried to release games for the system (not great stuff until Bully -- and its a port) and (2) Take 2 which publishes Rockstar's games was saved from financial ruin by a Wii title (Carnival Games).

Interesting read.

I agree that eventually someone (other than Nintendo) is going to try and tap different genre markets (besides mini-games), and someone is going to hit it big. Games like Red Steel, which is a mediocre game at best, had decent sales, just showing there is demand for a FPS-ish/sword fighting game. The Force Unleashed might satisfy this crowd.

Not a bad post, but a little general in your premise. There are only some developers that are taking issue with the Wii, and based on who they are and the games they develop (ie Rockstar), I'm guessing most of the people who work for that developer are not that different from the people they are making games for - ie "core" gamers who want their HD grafix. And I'm sure you're right that they are sore about backing the wrong horse as well.

However for each of the "hostiles" there seems to be at least one "friendly" - Capcom, Atlus, Sega, etc - who have embraced the Wii, both for it's innovations, and for not putting the HD gun to their development costs.

In the end, the free market will out. Maybe - hopefully- there will be room for all to succeed. If not, it is not likely to be the WiiHaters who come out on top - the disparity in development costs and prospective user bases is just too great for them to successfully outcompete Wii supporters.
