Why can't the same be done with digital purchases on consoles?

Because Windows/Linux/whatever you're running on PC (or Android on phone) are not closed like consoles are - and it's why, no matter what happens to Steam or games on it (or any other store for that matter), you'll be able to either find said games elsewhere, one way or the other. Consoles are closed gardens, you can't have that sort of guarantee on them.

That needs to change.

digital-only could work if purchases actually meant long-term access

offline play, proper refunds, and a way to back up games or transfer licenses would go a long way. people shouldn’t lose access to stuff they paid for just because they haven’t logged in for a while)

It can only work properly for us if there are proper refunds across the board and access to the game offline no matter what even if you're suspended or permabanned. Lending and selling the digital game would be great too, maybe even a rent option like there is for digital movies.

👏 She gets it!!

Lower the prices. If you are eliminating retail manufacturing and retail distribution, while also completely eliminating unsold inventory risk and retailer profits then i can only assume buying said product should come with a lower price for me, the consumer.

If you cant do that then whats the appeal. Youre giving me less for the same price.

Nintendo has kinda been doing that with digital downloads of Switch 2 games.

A half-truth. Mario Kart World is $80 either way. Fire Emblem is 80 for the physical, Yoshi and OOT are 70 for the physical. I feel like they're not giving you a discount when you pay $10 less to get those games digitally. They're charging you what they view as the normal price and charging you a premium for the physical copy.

I would not put it past them to make at least one more Nintendo game 80 and charge 90 for the physical copy.

Thanks, you just killed whatever optimism I had left for the future of gaming.

Future of gaming (as in delivery) is most likely Steam on everything.

They need to make unique digital copies, that can be transferred around, borrowed, sold, given away, rented. They need to allow third party stores on consoles. The alternative is what GOG is doing, just removing drm entirely.

I can imagine Xbox allowing some of the stuff, third party stores (since helix is windows based), and maybe transfer of digital copies from one account to another, since they have basicly made the technical solution already, when they did the disc-to-digital.
