Saw it yesterday myself. Really enjoyed it. Yes, it did not follow the games by the letter, it was more inspired by them, but IMO that was for the best. Had quite a few chuckles and was on the edge of my seat a lot of times. Cregger understands how to utilise space on the screen, both when we see large, open plains and small claustrophobic ones. I really think the execution overall was the best decision they could have made. Interestingly enough some of the scenes reminded me either of Fargo or 90's schlomp, like Pumpkinhead.

I am not a big fan of Barbarian or Weapons. They were both somewhat of a highbrow attempt that fell flat on their faces in the final act. But this movie worked for me. Plenty of camp, gore and enough confidence in the execution that I can easily call it the best video game movie that I have seen thus far. The only other one that could come close on a personal level is maybe the first Sonic movie.

As long as they don't advertise the movie as adaptation of specific game xy I don't see what's wrong with a good score if the movie is good (in their opinion). The reviews should mention not to expect the movie to be close to the game franchise, though. But would be weird to say "awesome movie but has nothing to do with the games 1/10"

Another great horror movie for 2026. The camerawork in this film was fantastic. It had some great scares and laughs, feeling kind of like an evil dead movie in some ways.

It's just so hypocritical of Rotten Tomatoes. Give low ratings to the Mario movies because of the many references to the source material, but give high ratings to a movie that has no characters from the games and very little nods to the games. I think Rotten Tomatoes is out of touch with what gamers want in video game movies.

There's nothing hypocritical, most critics just think Resident Evil is a better movie. And if you check Letterboxd or other sites, most "normal" people who rate movies also think so. 

That doesn't mean that people can't love the Mario movies for all the references and to be so close to the source material but that still doesn't mean they are better movies. It's really not that deep. 

It has some nods to the Resident Evil games and video game tropes in general, but honestly it could have just be called something else and easily turned into something that was it's own brand (ie: changing the name of the city from Racoon City to something else). It doesn't have a ton directly tied to the games. 

Still it was a fun time, Die Hard (the movie) seems to be more of a direct influence than any game, there's even a direct wink to this at one point.

I especially liked the first 30-45 minutes, it kind of starts to lose a bit of gas and the ending is abrupt and kinda like "well OK". It's a bit too silly, the humor works well generally but it kind of robs the film of some gravitas. It's kind of a weird mix of comedic moments mixed with scares, a bit like the Evil Dead movies in some respect. 

It's more of a mish-mash of Die Hard + Evil Dead than it is the Resident Evil games.
