Forums - Gaming - Trump administration considers new tariffs on gaming hardware

The Trump administration is weighing a new round of sweeping tariffs on semiconductors, eight people familiar with discussions told POLITICO — despite warnings from tech companies that the move could doom U.S. hopes of dominating artificial intelligence.

One tariff approach under consideration would dramatically expand the number of tech products subject to the duties, hitting not just chips but potentially many of the goods made with them, such as laptops, gaming consoles or the servers that fill data centers, the people said. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick favors a structure that would tie foreign companies’ relief from the tariffs to investment in U.S. chip manufacturing to juice more domestic production, said four of the people.

Completely useless.

Tariffs could in theory spur american production which would still drastically increase price but may also produce jobs, if they are done through congressional action.

If they are done through executive order, then nobody is going to invest in us manufacturing, because the tariffs can be easily undone by the next president. So you're not going to build a multi billion dollar plant if the tariffs can go away in two years.

So we get all of the bad aspects of tariffs without any of the supposed benefits. But hey thats what happens when idiots elect corrupt idiots.

Oh well, the Americans voted for him. They made their bed, now sleep in it.

Not everyone did. Also He and Elonazi have admitted to rigging it. Not to mention now they are gerrymandering. Putting restrictions on voting and trying to get rid of women, black people, disabled etc from voting.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

One look at the polls (absolutely historically bad for the GOP and Trump), and it's clear this all comes to an end very soon. They're on borrowed time, and their clock is swiftly running out. We just have to put up with it for a little bit longer.

Let's hope. Sadly, even with the economic, political, social, and even medical shitshow that is this administration, there is no path to a 67-seat supermajority in the Senate.

They won't need that. Even just taking the house back, dems can shut down most of his nonsense and send him and his people into a never-ending cycle of trials and subpoenas. But it's looking like the senate is in play, as well, and if that happens? Trump's minions would be better off resigning than sticking it out. It's going to be that painful for them.

If further tariffs for gaming hardware occur, we're looking at $1000 minimum for PS5 Pro, and shoot I honestly think Series X and PS5 could get close to that.
Tariffs through executive order are illegal and can easily be undone by a future president. Congress is the legal way to levy tariffs.
I have never been in favor of sweeping tariffs, just some in targeted industries and often temporary. Most tariffs are very self-defeating.

PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

This is either market manipulation or some attempt to hurt California. Doesn’t make any economic sense otherwise.

These tariffs are the whims of a man-toddler who hates being told no, as a lot of women know all too well.
