I would say there's plenty of talent under their umbrella; Machine Games, id Software, Arkane, Ninja Theory, and Double Fine seem to be pretty talented. |
Playground Games is actually their most talented studio I guess they are really going to proof it when Fable scores as high as most of the Forza Horizon games.

I forgot they did non-Forza stuff; regardless, there's certainly no shortage of talented developers in Microsoft's employ, the question is more whether management is up to the task of righting the ship.

Phil Spencer said it himself that whoever lost the PS4/Xbox One generation wouldn't be able to compete going forward because everyone built up digital libraries, making it much harder for the consumer to switch sides once they had already picked last gen. |
And yet, 20 million people switched sides and left Xbox this gen..
Anything is salvageable. What will actually happen? Well, I think we all know.
Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

The main point of consoles is not to sell as many consoles as possible but as many games per console as possible. In that regard all Xbox consoles have been very to extremely successful all of them have very high attachment ratios higher than most consoles.

Yeah but that proves my point even more. That 20 million loss this gen was mostly just the consequences of losing last gen. It put them into a position that they could never recover from. It's not people "Switching sides", it's just people fleeing from a sinking ship that doesn't have much time left.
Yes they can. But they need to focus on exclusives again.
COD needs to be top form COD again.
Halo needs to be top form Halo again.
Gears need to be top form Gears again.
Elder Scrolls need to be top form Elder Scrolls again.
Fable needsto be better than Fable ever was.
Rare IPs need to return. We want Banjo and Perfect Dark.
To a degree.
They can sell the business at any time. However the value has gone down from its peak and will continue sliding down. I don't know what the point of buying it would be but they could have a fire sale on the brand and get some money that way.

COD I think can bounce back, the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot wasn't that long ago and was brilliant.
Halo though is trickier, granted I haven't yet played 5 and Infinite, but from the reception they got, it seems 343i doesn't have a good grasp on what fans want from the series.
Gears, again I haven't played 4/5 yet, but wasn't 5 well received?
Elder Scrolls, forget it, probably won't be out til like 2035 and it'll probably suck.
Rare's a husk of their former selves.
The tricky part is, stuff like COD/Halo/Gears/etc are multiplat now, so even great games can't really boost consoles.
