Forums - Gaming - The Black Videogame Characters Appreciation Thread

February is Black History Month in the US. I thought it would be a good opportunity to create a thread sharing memories and appreciations of our favorite Black characters throughout gaming history.

I'll start:

CJ- Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

CJ is definitely not a good human being. He is a violent criminal guilty of murder and many other horrendous crimes. However, he is no different than Tommy Vercetti or Clive from the GTA games before him. CJ was a complex and charismatic character. His story involves trust, loyalty, betrayal and loss. What I think is really special is that for a while there one of the bestselling and most critically acclaimed games out there starred a Black man and forced gamers everywhere to explore and see San Andreas through his eyes.

Nadine Ross - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Nadine isn't a main character or even a playable character (in singleplayer). In fact, she is controversially voiced by white actress Laura Bailey. However I can't help but admire her character. She is a badass that stands up to Nate and Sam. What I admire most about her is that she realizes that the stupid treasure they are fighting over is not worth dying over like so many clueless henchman who died before her failed to realize. She leaves with her life and returns in the Lost Legacy.

Eddy Gordo - Tekken Series

Afro-Brazilian Eddy Gordo is one of Tekken's most popular and memorable characters. His move set has introduced millions around the world to the caporeira style of martial arts. The caporeira style was later incorporated in the character of Christie in later Tekken games as well.

Any characters you would like to shout out?

Honestly, this guy is probably one of the first that actually resonated with me.
He had the "Need to save my son" goal, surrounded by resolving an internal conflict of teaming up with individuals who were at odds with Cocoon.

Otherwise it would have to be Jax Briggs from Mortal Kombat.

Sergeant Johnson from Halo is an iconic badass

Matt from the Wii Sports games was legendary for how tough he was and being a badass mofo

Marina from Splatoon 2/3 is an absolute babe and super charismatic and endearing

Lucien from Expedition 33 is a real G.

Spoiler!
I just wish he was a playable character. I would have used him for sure.

Michael LeRoi from Shadow Man is awesome. I know he is originally a comic book character, but I only know him from the games.

Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs. One of my all-time favorites.

And of course, this guy right here. Final Fantasy's first black playable character.

You beat me to it.  I really loved Sazh in spite of the rest of the FFXIII cast to be meh or unlikable.

Rick from Dino Crisis

Am I a joke to you?

(As in: how the heck it took so long for someone to remember me?) XD
