Forums - Sony - PSP and Vita players, where did you migrate to?

For those who gamed on Sony's handhelds, what platform(s) did you move to when they were discontinued?

Do you now play on Switch/2, or on PC handhelds like Steam Deck/ROG Ally/Aya Neo/etc? Did you give up on handhelds altogether and go home console only?

I got a 3DS by 2013 after it became apparent that the Vita wasn’t going to take off and Sony was quickly pulling the plug. Especially after Studio Liverpool and Zipper were shutdown were not great signs either.

I’ve always gamed on handhelds, so I was always going to continue to play on one. I’ve since continued on the Switch and now Switch 2 as well as the Steam Deck the past few years. Which I will most certainly get a Steam Deck 2.

As much as I’ve tried to privatize Windows by disabling Copilot, disabling all data collection/telemetry, disabled all ads, converted my online Windows profile to an offline one, etc, I’ve realized it’s gonna be a never ending battle, so I’d rather stick with SteamOS for my PC handhelds.

I’ve also gotten into emulator handhelds like the ModRetro Chromatic or even original Game Boys with Everdrive

Where did I go? To highschool, then to college and then started working lol.

My answer doesn’t exactly match the question, but here goes. I just continued to buy other systems and games: WiiU, PS4, XOne, Switch, etc. I didn’t invest in PSP or PSV because they’re portable consoles, but because they were unique platforms with exclusive games.

Back when it launched, I went with PSP because I was certain the DS was going to fail. Nintendo didn't even have that much confidence in it themselves, hence the whole "we will continue to run the GBA line parallel with it" approach. Sony was bringing the heat again, PS1 style, and with CD-like tech to boot. Most of us were sure Nintendo was doomed. I mean, how could they compete? It was inevitable.

About six months later, I went into my local Gamestop and plopped the PSP down on the counter with my copies of Lumines and Twisted Metal and asked if I could trade it in toward a DS and a copy of Kirby, Meteos and Nintendogs (the last was for the lady; I swear, fellas). The employee looked at me, looked down at the PSP, snatched it up, turned it on and was like, "What? But why? This thing has such an amazing screen!" To which I replied, "Yeah... but so did the Gamegear." He hesitated for a moment, thinking, then he nodded and laughed in that secret way that only gamers in the presence of other gamers do and agreed. I ended up making the swap and went home with my new Nintendo DS and trio of games, happy as could be.

To this day, I still have that exact system and those three games.

And I'm still happy.

I still have my PSP but haven't once used it in over a decade. I rarely gamed on handhelds. I bought the PSP because it was a technical marvel. The games were a nice bonus (PSP had a solid game library). I didn't even consider buying a Vita, the hardware seemed quite nice but not nearly as special as the PSP was back in the day (nothing is!!) and the software was relatively poor imo.

In recent memory PC had been my main platform for a few years, but now I game mostly on PS5 followed by Switch in docked mode.

I also have a DS/3DS so I went nowhere. I still play them. Play my Switch games as well.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

I only recently got a PSP, but handhelds have always been just kind of a complementary side of gaming to me, so I never moved to or from them.

But I also have a GBA, N2DS, PSV, SW1 and SW2, so in a sense if you mean moving over on handhelds I kept getting the ones made available.

Do not have a portable PC like the Steamdeck or so yet but I'm not opposite to it either, maybe when the Steamdeck 2 releases if it ever gets priced decently around here I can get into it, or if Microsoft do move Xbox mostly to PC and release a portable Xbox that runs Steam, Epic and old Xbox console games too it might also be a good choice.

I left handheld gaming tbh

I enjoyed my vita but it also made me realise the bigger gaming experiences got, the less I enjoyed them portably.

With my Switch I almost never played it portably but I did enjoy some retro games in table top/stand mode.

Switch 2 has brought in a little more change there. The bigger screen has me enjoying portability a bit more and I bought a grip. My time being more restricted has encouraged a bit more playing in bed/at my desk.

I'm probably going to get a portable PS5 the minute its announced so I can continue doing that with most of my games (as they're primarily playstation). For example I'm still playing expedition 33 and I'd enjoy grinding portably but for main story playthroughs, sit in front of my 55" Oled

I could never get into portable gaming. Bought a gba and psp, got rid of both a few months later.

I just like my big screen and surround sound. Portables compromise too much for my taste.

I'm a poster child of someone who would not have bought a Switch (or s2) if it weren't a hybrid.
