Forums - Sales - FF7 Remake apparently off to a strong start on Switch 2

Simply because of the amount of Switch users in Japan (30m+) compared to PS users (<10m), I did see Japan as having the biggest potential for sales but alas it seems there is no hurry from that audience (S2) to pick up the game. Lets see legs.

If the Switch version is front loaded and not especially successful, I wouldn't mind them delaying part 3 for the platform so they can get the Playstation/PC/Xbox Version out first. I'll be playing on Playstation

Might be a good idea to wait for the official worldwide figures from Square Enix themselves, or at least the January Circana (NPD) numbers to get a better picture.

Yes, on surface these aren’t exactly stellar numbers in Japan.
But the thing to remember is that these are just physical numbers, no digital included, and that for the past 20 years, give or take, Final Fantasy has been a bigger name internationally than in Japan.

The fact remains that it’s still selling out at most retailers and is still #2 on the US eShop behind Dragon Quest (Another Square Enix title).

Nah, FF XVI sold 336,027 units in the first week in Japan, and the game sold 3M units worldwide in 5 days.

336k in Japan without digital. Including digital that's easily over 600k in Japan so that's around 1/5 of it's sales in Japan and don't forget PS5 sales in Japan is like less than 1/10 worldwide

Sorry to say that, but has no way ff xvi sold over 600k with digital numbers in Japan in the first week.

I was assuming PS5 digital ratio in Japan was around 40-50%. But let's say it's at 30% that's around 500k for FF16 in Japan first week so 1/6 worldwide. Difference here is that less than 1/10 of PS5 sales are from Japan compared to Switch 2 1/4

I think multiplying by 4 is too much since FF is still the most popular in Japan even though it's declining. 23k could be half of it's sales world wide tbh

Okay I'm not gonna include digital so 336k in Japan and 3m worldwide so around 1/10. PS5 is at 90m worldwide and only 7m of that is from Japan so that's less than 10%. Switch 2 is around 25% in Japan so I multiplied FF7 remake on Switch 2 by 4 and so I'm guessing it's less than 100k physically worldwide

The digital ratio was 35% for PS4 when FF7R launched on that platform. Since then Sony has only grown in digital ratio over physical and now with an all digital PS5 version as well as well the Pro, PS5 most likely has a 40-50% digital split. So imo it's entirely possible for FF 16 to have sold over 600k in Japan at launch.

So no big numbers, it is not surprising.

Physical only, though still I’m not sure the sales figures can simply be multiplied by four to accurately estimate WW figures. Accounting for digital, a debut of 200k WW would be pretty darn solid for 6yo port of a game frequently listed at $10-20USD.

Also key to note that the "physical" release is a key card, which likely leads to a higher digital share as its essentially just a glorified download code anyway so many people will just cut out the middle man and download it.

The FF brand has also waned massively in Japan so despite it being a JRPG its home country is likely no longer its biggest market.

We don't have a sales breakdown of what FF7 Remake (PS4) sold in each region; my understanding is that it was estimated at about 1 mil in Japan with the original PS4 version. Despite great figures and quite possibily the biggest PS4 game in Japan, 1 mil is still a huge decline for a series that used to sell at least 2.5 to 3 mil in Japan alone.

I think we can agree Final Fantasy is part of a legacy series in Japan where everyone who wanted to play the game bought it within the first few weeks of its release. So the Nintendo Switch 2 opens up an entirely new generation of fans for the franchise. I think it will be a slow burner and if the combined physical and digital sales are close to 100k, then it will have the potential to do really well in its home market.

For Square Enix I think this has been a stroke of very good luck where they have a short space of time between the release of titles. So where as Playstation fans had to wait 4 years for the sequel and another 3 to 4 years for the conclusion the players on Xbox and Nintendo don't have to wait that long. That could be great for the growth of sales.

Great to hear.

FFVII Remake is so good.
