Forums - Sales - Is nintendo the winner of the 8th gen or the 9th gen?

Is the switch an 8th gen console

Yes its 8th gen 19 41.30%

Yes its 9th gen 27 58.70%

Total:46

I think we need to come up with some new metrics to determine who wins a championship. Something really outlandish, preferably. Alternatively, something we only have fuzzy data on, so we can debate it ad nauseam. Maybe software sales? Nintendo doesn't track most download-only titles in their software totals, while Sony does. This way we could argue endlessly about how much digital-only software is being sold on the eShop, without ever coming to a proper conclusion.

Revenue: Sony's gaming revenues are over $25 billion annually, significantly higher than Nintendo's $15 billion.

Apologies, but we will need to take Nintendo's belts away and give them to Sony. :(

Please update your sig as applicable.

Why are you using revenue and not profit

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

why are you using sales and not money?

In 2023, PlayStation's annual net profits were $5.71 billion, which is a 23% increase from the previous year. In contrast, Nintendo's annual net profits were $1.9 billion, which is a 4% decrease from the previous year.

Please return all championship belts so we can award to the real winner.

“Consoles are great… if you like paying extra for features PCs had in 2005.”

We should subtract all Nintendo Switch Lites right? As the Switch basically replaced the whole handheld market and the Switch Lite is just a handheld. Maybe also subtract 0,5 of the sales for each regular Switch? You guys agree?

Inactive. Bye!

Switch will be the last dedicated game hardware to sell 150 million+ I think. Sony can't come close to that, and Switch 2 will be in tough to get there.

Chances are fairly high that Switch 2 won't outsell the PS5 and that Nintendo won't be able to match Sony gaming's profits.

Never say never... PS6 may reach 250M, same goes for Switch 2, or maybe even "Xbox Phoenix reborn phony doomsday"

I would consider Switch 1 to be 9th gen and Switch 2 to be 10th gen. It only feels weird because Nintendo had to pull the plug on the Wii U early. I feel like the gap in launch between Switch 2 & PS6/Next Xbox (if there is one lol) might even be closer than Switch & PS5/XSX.

What if it isn't? Would that change how you classify these consoles

@angrypoolman It still wouldn't. At worst, I can see the gap being more or less the same (which would be the case if PS6 & Next Xbox don't release until Holiday 2028). If that happens, then I would still consider Switch 2 to be 10th gen along with PS6 & Next Xbox, much like how I considered Switch 1 to be 9th gen with PS5 & XSX. Technically, the Switch 1 competed more with the PS5 & XSX than PS4 & Xbox One (Mar 2017 - Oct 2020 would be competing with PS4 & Xbox One, whereas Nov 2020 - Jun 2025 would be competing with PS5 & XSX). The Switch 2 and PS6/Next Xbox would follow almost that exact same pattern if the next systems aren't released until Holiday 2028. We'll see if they push them back that far though!
