Machina adjusted our Switch 2 and Switch 1 estimates up a little bit following this earnings report.

Switch 2: 9.24m -> 9.30m

Switch 1: 151.93m -> 152.06m

9 million is probably about right.

I did some back of the napkin math. Famitsu had the Switch 2 selling 2.1 million through the end of September. At its current level, its about 240K shipped over sold. They make up about 23% of shipments, so if you take the 240, divide it by 23%, you get about 1 million shipped globally over sold. I think its actual sales are between 8.5-9M since Japan has still been a competitive market for Switch 2 where its going down in others (as seen by it being down MoM in Sept in the US). It does seem like Nintendo pushed the Pokemon Z-A bundles into this quarter. Current management seems more interested in making the numbers look good than they did in the early Switch days. They also didn't have sell through numbers despite having it in their previous report and other reports, so my guess is the good numbers here have a lot to do with shipments. We'll have to see if this is going to be a big holiday item. Hard to say with the K-shaped economy and everything selling faster but worse (coughMonsterHunterWildscough)

The one number they will not hit is their software target. They only have an attach rate of about 2 but Switch was closer to 3.5 in Q3 2017. Not to mention that 8 million of that 20 million are bundle titles. 45 million was already going to be tough but 49 aint happening. Regardless of how the hardware dose, I think it's going to have the same issue as the PS5 where software sales aren't great.

I think DK Bananza sales disproves this a bit, for it to already have sold 3,5M copies with an attach rate of over 30 % is very impressive in the current industry, Sony did not reach those sales for Astro Bot on a 70M+ user base. I think sales for Nintendo first party games will be very good during the Switch 2 generation, their IP remains very popular. I mean DK Bananaza reached in full game sales on a low install base sales numbers which Xbox multiplatform games like Indiana Jones and Doom didn't even achieve on player count metrics by including gamepass players.

These are the kind of sales numbers which shows why Nintendo does not need to go multiplatform any time soon, because they can sell exclusive games on a low install base and still make those games profitable after 3 months on the market.

Damn 154m for Switch 1, I think Sony will have to announce the numbers of PS2 consoles sold outside of the Earth, like 5 million PS2 sold on Mars, 3 million on Jupiter, etc.

Some people are just obsessed with PS2 and need some new material.

lol, I was caught

The only explanation I can come up with for Switch 1 downward revision is that Nintendo is shifting that much more resources and costs towards ramping up Switch 2 production as much as possible. Otherwise, it just doesn't make sense that they would revise the Switch DOWN just before the holiday season when it's getting a Pokemon and Metroid game released on it.

It is clear now that they are not going to put much effort into chasing 160m and catching the PS2 - A shame, really. Because if they did and they continued to adequately support Switch 1, it can catch it easily.

But it is evident that they are quickly moving on to Switch 2 and trying to produce as much supply as they can to meet the massive demand. Which is the right thing to do business-wise - Support your new system that’s going to carry and drive your business in the next decade rather than clinging to your old one from last decade.

But man, I really wanted to see history be made - It could still happen, but it is not looking good.

If no one tries to pretend that ZA bombed like a Sony Hero Shooter for not being on this report from before it releases, I'll be very surprised.

...Let's be honest, someone is going to try that. Someone will be that desperate to find a way to spin this negatively.

Funny that Sony keep being mentioned here all the time as a sad attempt at petty humor to try to elevate Nintendo, and it keeps being upvoted by others...

One really needs to wonder where the need to try paint themselves above another that has nothing to do with the topic comes from.

Maybe there lies the desperation you are looking for.

In a way, nice compromise that the two most succesful systems (PS2 and Switch) share the top crown. PS2 takes the most sold hardware crown while Switch will likely take the most sold software crown.

The Software sales crown belongs to the PS4, I believe.

With this many sales in a quarter with only one big game, I think we can put to rest any notion that Switch 2 is in trouble or losing steam.

All that online FUD about it being overpriced/Nintendo's Xbox One moment/etc turned out to count for nothing in the end.

It's really bizarre how much of a repeat the discourse around the Switch 2 launch was online compared with the first.

Complaints about the high price, third party support, and weak hardware were mostly the same between the two.

Then when both launched and became huge hits the discourse shifted to "it's a success... but it's going to lose momentum soon! It's only the enthusiasts buying it!"

And then the cliff never came for both of them, lol. It's like these people never learn anything.

Hopefully these results put these nonsensical talks to rest, but when the Switch 3 releases, you just know it's going to happen again.

Third time is the charm

Mario Kart World is aiming for that 'Wii Sports' attach rate, I see.

And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is gunning for Wii Sports total sales

I feel like you miss the point. Youtube channels like NintenDeen (Just the first one that comes to mind) have tried to spin any news about the Switch 2 or Nintendo in an extremely negative light with constantly shifting goal posts. Concord also represents the biggest flop by a first party developer in recent memory both in terms of sales and media attention.

The dig isn't at Sony, it's at the group of people that believe no matter what that the Switch 2 is a failure and cherry pick data or reframe/devalue impressives feats (like the biggest launch globally) to keep the negativity train going. A group of people who would forseeably try to use the lack of Pokemon ZA sales in the quarterly report as proof of Nintendo's failing, stating it failed to cross a million in sales or the sales being so abysmal Nintendo wouldn't release them. It would be compared to Concord because a really succesful company released a game that flopped.

But you know...call other people petty I guess...
