Forums - Gaming - ROG Xbox Ally X vs Nintendo Switch 2

Here is a Z1e Legion GO, with an 8.8" screen for $490 open box.

Here is a UT3G eGPU adapter for $150

Here is an RX 9060XT 16GB for $350.

$50 600W Thermaltake PSU

Total Price $1040 and when plugged into the GPU you're going to get 2-3 times the performance of the Ally X, even with USB4 performance penalty, and full RDNA4 feature support. And of course you can look deeper for a better GPU deal. I just chose a modern entry level one without looking deeply.

EDIT: A 9060XT 8GB can be found for $270, making it cheaper than the Ally X.

It seems the only purpose for the existence of the ROG Xbox Ally is Xbox branding.

Even the Xbox Ally at $600 is significantly more expensive than LCD Steam Deck and Switch 2. And the performance benefits do not seem worth it. And the performance benefits for the $1000 Ally X definitely don't seem worth it.

Here is what Cyberpunk 2077 look on both:

Such a strange video. The steam deck is a 800p handheld and that is the mode people use surely. Also why is the video comparing docked performance of Switch 2 with systems designed for purely portable use? I have zero interest in seeing what the Steam Deck can do in 1080p. I want to see a comparison of how they all perform in portable mode only. Why is Cyberpunk not being shown in 720p for its performance mode which is upscaled from 640x360p on the LCD panel? Also now there is FSR4 and frame gen support on Steam Deck so surely that is how you would compare them as the best level of performance for Steam Deck. It's a strange video to say the least. It should compare all three systems with their best settings for portable use only. It would also be useful to know how long the battery lasts for each system. I've learned more about the content creator with this video than I have learnt anything about these gaming systems.

Basically the comparison should show a blank screen for the Switch 2 because it's still plugged into the dock so not able to play any games on the go with this performance. It's like a PC enthusiast showing a 20 Teraflop GPU PC compared to Switch 2 in portable performance mode. Totally ridiculous and unfair.

I do agree about using the FSR4 mod. Having said that, Digital Foundry also uses 720p for its Steam Deck comparisons, and that is likely to keep the aspect ratio in these comparisons like to like with the 16:9 devices the Steam Deck is being compared against.

For example in a video DF released yesterday "we're benching exclusively in 720p here." 12:34

A lot of people also do use  their Steam Deck docked. It is a very common option for Mac-primary users, for example, who want to play games but don't want to get a Gaming PC or consoles.

I would not use 30fps->60fps frame generation in any comparisons largely because it is contentious on whether or not that is a viable way to play a game, even if on a handheld.

"Rog xbox ally X is a low end pc, so makes sense"... a low end pc that cost $1000.

A $1000 device not comprehensively beating a $450 device is pretty dire.

The market for this thing is gonna be a very narrow slice.

I predict that 15 ROG Ally X units will be produced lifetime. (Only 7 will sell.)

Battery is a big lose for the Switch 2. I would have REALLY liked if they could fit a slightly bigger battery I don't know... Going from 2ish hours on demanding games to a solid 3 would make things much better.

But besides that, Switch 2 is really holding its own.

Only if you run using low performance mode..... at high performance mode (where Rog Xbox Ally X, can go toe to toe or beat Switch 2 graphics),
the differnces are minor.  Carry a battery bank with you, and your switch can go more than long enough.

The fact that you can then Dock the Switch 2 as well, and play on a tv.....  It seems like a much better value offering.
(which is crazy, cuz 450$ at launch felt really expensive for the Switch2)

The ROG Ally X can be docked and output to a TV as well.

FSR4 definitely puts the ROG Ally X ahead of the Switch 2... The display on the Rog Ally X is miles ahead of the Switch 2 as well, the Switch 2's display is factually a regression over the Switch 1 OLED or even Steamdeck OLED or any other decent and modern quality LCD.

Carrying battery banks and extra accessories for a portable device kinda defeats the purpose of a portable device.

--::{PC Gaming Master Race}::--

Actually talking about the display, why would anyone get this over the Legion Go Gen 2? For $100 more ($1099.99) you get an 8.8 inch OLED screen, and the same chipset + detachable controllers. You also don't lose VRR, which was Asus's main excuse for not going with an OLED display for the 2025 Ally X.

Meanwhile the screen in this is the same one they've been using since the original Ally release.

I was wanting to upgrade to the Z2e Ally X from my Z1e Ally (non-x) before it was announced but the other brands are doing a lot better here. But probably will wait until 2026/2027's handheld releases.

People can just admit Nintendo made a very nice piece of hardware and swallow their pride, but some are still going to bang their head against the wall I guess. It holds its own against $1000 hardware because it's well made hardware.

Wii/DS era was just that an era, an era that is over ... if you that was going to be Nintendo's hardware philosophy forever, you were naïve and don't understand your own gaming history, Nintendo has a long and varied hardware history long before those casual centric systems.

Nintendo is back to offering very good hardware performance for a reasonable price point, just as the NES, Super NES, N64, and GameCube all did in their day.
