Forums - Sony - Why are Sony's studios releasing so few games? Jin Ryan is to blame.

At the start of the gen Sony committed a whole bunch of its studios to GaaS games, many of which ended up getting canned.

Bluepoint for example was put to work on a live service God of War game that was cancelled earlier this year:

Because of how long it takes to make modern AAA games, many of these studios may not release another game for like 5-6 years.

Exactly. They wasted a few years trying to build a GaaS game for each franchise (God of War, Spiderman, TLOU) and now here we are... This generation has been very underwhelming for me - I haven't even bought a PS5 (yet) and am basically only playing on my Switch.

Jim and some of the other leadership can absolutely be blamed.
Even more so than on PS4, they've invested in cinematic AAA games. And the GAAS they bet big on and have failed miserably.
PS4 seems to be the final PlayStation platform to date that had a mix of AAA games and mid to smaller stuff from Sony (Fat Princess Adventures, Gravity Rush 2, etc).
If Astro Bot isn't somehow a AAA game, it's close enough to it. But it is breath of fresh air compared to Sony's usual output right now.
Before the PS6 comes out, there could only be one or two unannounced first-party games at this point, given how long they take to make.

And..

Well..

Thats it,noo more games

You're missing games.

But you're also completely ignoring all the games that Sony cancelled. Why hasn't Bluepoint released a game this gen, because it got cancelled.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Gran Turismo 7

Horizon Call of the Mountain

Firewall Ultra

You could include others like Until Dawn Remake.

By this point last gen (July 2018) PS4 had Uncharted 4, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, God of War 2018, Horizon Zero Dawn, Infamous Second Son, Ratchet & Clank 2016, Killzone Shadowfall, Gravity Rush 2, Gran Turismo Sport, The Last Guardian.

By this point in the PS3's life, (July 2011) it had Uncharted 1 & 2, God of War 3, Killzone 2 & 3, Wipeout HD, Motorstorm 1, Pacific Rift, and Apocalypse, Infamous 1 & 2, LittleBigPlanet, Modnation Racers, Gran Turismo 5...

Compared to that, yeah, PS5's first party output to date is subpar.

Part of it can be blamed on budgets and development times growing as graphical fidelity increases, (but that's their own choice to chase the graphics dragon) but their GaaS ambitions definitely took a toll as well.

I can probably count as many ps5 titles by this point though.

Demon souls remake, ratchet, spiderman2, gow ragnarok, kena, returnal, helldivers,  , gt7, astrobot, horizon 2, for spoken, fr7 rebirth, stray death stranding 2 , rise of Ronin, tlou1 remake

Those weren't complete lists, just the highlights. I didn't include for example Warhawk on PS3 or Knack on PS4.

Sony also has more studios now than they did last gen or in Gen 7 thanks to recent acquisitions.
