That's true, stopped buying games awhile now as I have about 400 PS3/PS4/PS5 and 50 Switch backlog games that I haven't finished. 🤦🏻♂️
Always wanted them to stop making too many games 10 years ago!!

In 2024, the games industry saw a significant number of layoffs, with reports estimating that around 14,800 to 16,000 jobs were lost. These figures indicate a substantial increase compared to the previous years, with many sources citing the number of layoffs in 2024 as exceeding those of 2023. |
This is not limited to the game industry. The tech jobs saw near 250k losses 2022-2024. There has definitely been losses due to bad performing games and such, but there are also external pressures such as profit driven downsizing and AI is having pretty massive impact 2024 and moving forward.
Okay. I get people's reasoning for why this isn't a bad thing. I've slightly changed my opinion as it has many bad aspects and some really good for consumer and creators. The ammount of money that makes its way through the industry every year is insane. However I still fear for the AAA even though they can course correct and they're savy with money, they'll be fine. If less players come in at these prices, double A games start succeeding more and more like Clair Obscur and MTX take a hit then I'm sure they'll redujust prices.
I still think GTA6 will be 69,99 euro if many big, sure to sell games don't get the sales they are expecting between no and release. Simply cuase more people in makes them way more on shark cards in the long run.
Last edited by LegitHyperbole - on 10 June 2025Game releases arent the issue.
The issue is within the industry itself.
So many layoffs, studio closures and consolidation/mergers.

It is all platforms tho
Xbox ID is insane, they invest a ton of money into indies and you have a ton of releases as an example:
13 Xbox indies releasing in one day, they seem on their way to break last years record (+1.000 games released) who is keeping up with all those games?

Sure and it’s true for every console generation since the dawn of gaming.
Between Atari, Colecovision & Intellivision, there were over 800 games released.
Between NES & Master System, there were over 1700 games released.
Between SNES, Genesis, Gameboy & Game Gear, there were over 4,000 games released.
Between PS1, Saturn, N64 & Gameboy Color, there were over 6,000 games released.
Between Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, Xbox & GBA, there were over 8,000 games released.
Between DS, PSP, 360, PS3 & Wii, there were over 11,000 games released.
Between 3DS, Vita, Wii U, PS4 & XBO, there were over 11,000 games released.
Between Switch, PS5 & Xbox Series, there are currently about 8,000 games released.
Now obviously many of these games were multiplatform or exclusive to certain regions but it also doesn’t factor in PC games or games released on the smaller niche platforms over the years.
There has never been and never will be a time when people can keep up with all the game releases. Even in the industry’s infancy, people couldn’t possibly keep up with all the Atari releases.
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Honestly, I find I am buying less games these days as the market is flooded, but there is also a reduction in Physical retail... But I am definitely spending more on hardware.

The early gens were just one big platform and others who had a few, DC/N64 didn't really have that many games an example while PS one and PS2 had a massive libary. Steam had almost 19k games last year this year maybe 25K.

Yeah, I was mainly referring to games that are generally considered of high quality. But there are probably a few people out there who did play the entire (small) game libraries of platforms that bombed or weren't successful enough, just to brag about it or something.
The vast majority of gamers will skip the vast majority of good quality games. Which is fine, companies only need a tiny fraction of gamers to buy their games.
