Forums - Nintendo - Even without updates, many Switch 1 games see massive improvement on Switch 2

What do we reckon the chances are that we'll see Nintendo allow Switch 1 games to be played in docked mode on Switch 2 undocked?

A lot of S1 games are 1080p docked so would look great on Switch 2's screen.

I'm not sure I can see Nintendo being that charitable though...

Sadly, it's not a straight forward 1:1 conversion really. Handheld mode requires UI/text elements to be shrinked and modified to accommodate with the smaller screen they were played on.

You'd need individual updates for games to make something like this available.

Wouldn't the bigger screen solve for that problem?

It wouldn't even need to be the default. Have all S1 games run in undocked mode as standard but include an option to switch to docked...

EDIT If I hold my S23 ultra in front of me it takes up just about as much of my field of view as my 55" TV at about 3 metres away.

The Switch 2's screen is significantly bigger than my phone so surely it'll manage text as well as many TV setups.

Unless I'm misunderstanding?

It's in the video in the OP; locked 30fps now.

I am lazy too, so I have to ask: Did they test the co-op mode in AoC? That one commonly became a slide show when there was more action going on. The game operated in sub 10 fps territory.

They show it running in co-op briefly and it's running at a flat 30fps.

The vast majority of successor consoles ever made are just a beefier version of their predecessor.

PS2 was just a beefier PS1, PS3 a beefier PS2, PS4 a beefier PS3, Xbox Series a beefier Xbone which was was a beefier 360 which was a beefier OC Xbox, etc.

The step up in power from Switch 1 to Switch 2 is not remotely slight/minor:

Sorry but again i see a slight difference.

Ps1 to ps2 whas a massive difference

Ps2 to ps3 whas a  massive difference.

After that every console gen whas a slight beefier upgrade.

Not massive.

Not WOOW omg look at that!!!

I mean, if you consider every console leap in the last 12 years to be minor, then you'll never see another "big" leap again just due to diminishing returns.

Technologically though, the upgrade from Switch 1 to Switch 2 is quite large.

Me personally, I thought the PS3 -> PS4 jump was still very noticeable.

The vast majority of the 7th gen games are running at 720p or lower, and bellow 30 fps. The jump from 720p to 1080p images (at least on PS4) and stable fps for most of the games was huge.

Obviously due to diminishing returns it wasn't a big jump compared to previous generations, but it's still noticeable. PS4 to PS5 feels a loooooooot smaller in comparison.

The jump from Switch 1 to 2 is arguably bigger than going from PS3 to PS4, so to me, it's still a very noticieable technical leap, but not a big as previous generations like I said.

Some PS4/XB1 games aged like wine and still look great today. If that's the bar for Switch 2 then honestly I'll be very satisfied.

Batman: Arkham Knight impressed me on PS4 Pro in 2019 when I played it and it still looks phenomenal largely due to amazing art direction. I know engines don't equal graphical fidelity, but I can't believe it's running on Unreal Engine 3.

The only problem with these games is while they run better on the Switch 2. They can't benefit from any form of real upscale than the upper limit resolution they're capped at. Also, these games are wearing their Switch 1 skeleton all over them.

You'd need actual updates à la No Man's Sky to actually profit from some serious improvements that goes beyond the performance cap.
