FAST RMX for me I think; I miss F-Zero, and it's cool that they keep its candle burning in a way, while also being stylish, slick, and beautiful in its own right.

Spec Ops The Line is also excellent and a brilliant subversion of the shooters of its era.

One thing's for sure, they punch way above their weight in graphics; Factor 5, Shinen, and Crytek all delivered results way above and beyond what you'd expect in many of their games. German engineering on display I guess.

This old maze game from the Atari 8-bit line that was submitted for sale through the Atari Program Exchange (APX).

Deponia, Edna & Harvey, Lost Horizon, Secret Files: Tunguska, Jack Keane, The Book of Unwritten Tales, The Inner World, The Whispered World... all great point&click adventure games from Germany.

There are many, but "there can be only one" - Gothic.

The best German games aren't video games. They're board games! I really like Settlers of Catan and Power Grid, but there are a ton of really good German board games out there.

German-styled, which later became known as Euro-styled, Eurogames or just Euros, have been major game changer in board game industry ever since Catan made a massive splash worldwide back in 90s, with German designers still among the top BG designers, and German Spiel Des Jahres still being most prestigious game award.

That said, Euros are now being designed everywhere, so it's just common name for game style, not its origin.

Catan is still a fine game, and Power Grid is still great and very..."efficient"...game, as Quinn from Shut Up & Sit Down would say, but I'd recommend you something newer (German no less) that's modern classic, and scratches similar itch to Catan, but with better mechanics, more involved and in less time - Concordia from 2013 or Concordia Venus, new version from 2018.

Unfortunately, Anno 1602 doesn’t count as it was developed by the Austrian developer Max Design. Anno 1404 does live up to the criteria though, as it was co-developed by Blue Byte and Related Designs, both based in Germany. So I count it as a vote for that!

I have always loved Settlers II. The campaign start where you discover ruins of barracks and other military buildings and then copy the design and build them yourself was such an adventure. Sending out scouts to explore and hearing the little hoot-sound getting a message that you found an enemies land.

However created the DS-port could not have played through the game once in testing however. I hate how unplayable that game is even if I like that they tried to make it happen.

From the listed ones, it would have been Settlers II (Or Die Siedler II, as I played it in the original German language).

However, I actually prefer the first one as you can't cheese the game with catapults here and the transportation system seems more complex than on it's successor.

But while Blue Byte is my favorite developer, the Settlers are not my favorite game series from them. I grew up with wargames, so the Battle Isle series is a better fit for me. And I think the winner will be Battle Isle 3, narrowly beating History Line: 1914-1918.

So my top 3:

  1. Battle Isle 3
  2. History Line 1914-1918
  3. The Siedler (known outside of Germany as Serf City)

The Settlers was the bomb in my youth. I used to play the shit out of it on the Amiga. So I will say Blue Byte.
