Forums - Nintendo - Is Switch 2's 256gb on par or worse than PS5's 825 launch model?

256gb Switch 2...

On par with PS5's 667gb available space 10 22.22%

Worse than PS5's 667gb available space 26 57.78%

Better than PS5's 667gb available space 9 20.00%

Total:45

How much worse is this? The games seem to be exceeding 64gb carts with game keys or they are very close to it. I can't get the math on this right. Some games on PS5 are 100g-150gb these days.

No worries, most people can't afford to buy more than a couple games anyways....
Internal storage matching the price hikes on games :p

MKW seems to be 23.4 GB, but that has a lot of repetition and stylized visuals.
The Legend of Zelda TOTK (16.3 GB base + 3.6 GB upgrade)
The Legend of Zelda BOTW (14.4 GB base + 9.7 GB upgrade)

Some info of 3rd party games

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/04/more-switch-2-estimated-file-sizes-seemingly-revealed

Some other bigger ones

Yakuza 0 DC (47GB)
Wild Hearts S (40 GB)
Madden NFL 26 (62 GB)

Anyway if you can afford more games than the internal storage, you can afford a micro SDXC card as well!

I always get external storage for consoles. Consoles never have enough. I have a 1TB in SSD in my PS5 but I want to get a 4TB at some point as I have more games than I can store. SX I got the highest they sell in 2TB card. My Switch has 512GB SD card and I have 160 physical games. Some digital. 200GB of space left. Whenever I get a Switch 2. Probably get a 1.5TB card.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Much worse.... the compression technology Sony uses is more effective than the one in the Xbox.
Sometimes games take up drastically more space on xbox, than playstation.

That 825gb feels bigger than it is (or xbox/pc's 1tb feel smaller).

Also on PS5 you can buy a 1tb ssd, for like ~55$, or a 2tb one for like ~120$.

A game like  "Split Fiction" is 71 GB on the Switch 2, while being 79 GB on the PS5
(even though compression technology is better, likely texture quality/sizes differnces).

The thing is if you have 256 gb, then 71 GB game is ~27,8% of your disk space.
While if you have 825GB, then 79GB is ~9,6% of your disk space.

Nintendo games come on cartrdiges, so I'm not too worried. By the time I will need a SD, I'm sure they will be cheap enough for me to not care about it anymore. I also don't think I will be playing too many third party games on the Switch 2.

At least I personally do need a whole lot more space on the PS5, as each and every game has to be installed fully and all. That said, my PS5 Pro has 2 TB internal storage and an addidtional SSD with 2 TB, so I'm good, lol.

For first party games probably about on par, maybe even slightly better, because Nintendo games are much smaller than average.

For third party Switch 2 storage is much worse. You will not be able to install Cyberpunk, SF6, Split Fiction and Hitman on your switch 2 at the same time without buying an SD express card, which are themselves expensive.

When MS brings games like Forza and especially CoD... Oof.

I'll keep using my steam deck for portable third party gaming. Got a refurbished 2TB SSD for £75 and put it in. 2TB SD express don't even exist and the only 1TB I found was $199 lol.

Factually worse.

256GB is 2,048,000,000,000 bits.
825GB is 6,600,000,000,000 bits.

Will games be smaller? Impossible to tell, the console and games aren't out yet, nor do we have long term trends to observe.

Switch 2 is better because it has actual physical games unlike the PS5 which forces everything to be copied to the SSD. As such, the amount of space that games take up measures in the MBs instead of the GBs.

As for third party ports? I am not going to pretend that people will be in a rush to buy the worst versions of multiplats.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

Do you work at Nintendo?

No, I just have a habit of pointing out facts that are commonly and at times conveniently forgotten about. Digital Mario Kart World takes up 23.4 GB of space, but physical MKW only needs MBs for its save data. Same story for other physical games, so you'll need to buy a dozen or so of them to even fill up a single GB on the internal storage. Add some potential DLCs and patches and you are still looking at only ~20 GB for the whole bunch with most of that going to DLCs. That's why it's manageable to make 256 GB in a Switch 2 last longer than 825 GB in a PS5.

If I worked for Nintendo, I would say that game-key cards are just as good as game cards and that everyone should buy all the amazing third party multiplats and pick up a Nintendo-branded micro SD express card along with them.
