Forums - Nintendo - To which direction should the next 3D Mario game go?

Which 3D Mario game do you like the most?

Super Mario Odyssey 10 27.78%

Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Galaxy 2 10 27.78%

Another 3D Mario game 16 44.44%

Surprising a lot of people, the Switch 2 direct ended up not showing us a new 3D Mario game but rather a 3D Donkey Kong game. That doesn't mean we won't have a new 3D Mario game on the Switch 2, it defenetly will happen soon or later. Thinking about that, which style of 3D Mario game, would you like the next entry on the franchise to have: Sandbox like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Odyssey or Course-Clear like the Galaxy games? I remember someone at Nintendo stating that the on-the-go nature of the Switch made the newest game of the franchise at the time more suitable in the sandbox style, which is true. Since the Switch 2 is also an on-the-go console and Super Mario Odyssey's sucess, it would make sense to keep the sandbox style in the next Mario 3D. But I'm not asking what it will probably happen, but rather what you would like to happen.

Tied to this topic, I'm gonna create a pool about about which game do you like the most: Super Mario Odyssey or one of Galaxy games. I'm doing it because, although Super Mario Odyssey is really great, I don't feel like there is a consensus that it is the pinnacle of 3D Mario games and I'm curious to see a pool about it here. Probably people who vote for Super Mario Odyssey will prefer the next 3D Mario game to be sandbox and people who vote for the Galaxy games will prefer it to be a Clear-Course game, so these two topics kinda converges into one

I do like the Galaxy games a bit more than Odyssey, but I love them all. Im fine with either of those styles for the next 3D Mario game. I dont really want a fully open world one though.

The next one should be Galaxy 3.

It's been 15 years already since the last one, and on modern hardware it could look gorgeous and they could really go wild with gameplay ideas.

Something new and original. Not a direct sequel to any of them. Ever since the new VA took over. Nintendo changed the art style of Mario. He now looks like a 3D version of his SNES era art. A welcome change from the dull GameCube design they used for 20 years. It's time to shine in a new 3D adventure. Fresh look. Fresh new games. Break away from the old.

I liked Odyssey and thought it got the closest to the Mario 64 feeling I've always wanted to have again (Galaxy 2 was pretty close as well), so whatever they do I just want to have intricately made stages with a lot to explore in them.

Heard a lot of people ask for an open world 3D Mario and after playing Bowser's Fury I just felt like it was not very interesting and kind of dull, so hoping we don't get something that goes that direction (though I think we probably will).

I'm a big fan of the Galaxy games. While Mario 64 was revolutionary, it was a little jarring to have such a small feeling world, and only one player, especially after Super Mario Bros 3 and World which were massive adventures through multiple worlds.

The Galaxy games were basically Super Mario 64 on steroids, and they really made the 3D world feel like a living and breathing place that was vast in scope. On top of adding the gravity effects and the planets, it seemed to fulfill a lot of what Super Mario 64 was prototyping. So, of the mainline 3D Mario trilogy, I'd say Galaxy 1&2 is my favourite, Odyssey follows, and Super Mario 64 - while I respect its place in history - is at the bottom of the trilogy.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Odyssey is my favourite 3D Mario Game. So in that style. I class 3D Land/World as it's own separate series. I would hope we get new entries in all of the Super Mario series for the Switch 2 (3D, 3DWorld, 2D, Maker).

And I really want to see what a DKC game in the style of 3DWorld could be like.

That's what I am thinking. They will expand upon Bowser's Fury and make a full on open world in which you literally journey your way into Bowser's lair.

Bonus question: Super Mario Galaxy 1 had the most impact due to the newness of it.

It would be interesting to see a Mario Odyssey where all the levels are on the same giant map, not sure if they can make it work well but yeah after they have made Mario Kart World one big open map it wouldn't surprise me to see them try the same with 3D Mario. Unfortunately I haven't got round to Bowser's Fury yet, I played 3D World on WiiU.
