Forums - Gaming - Nearly 1 in 5 Japanese in their 20s have spent so much on in-game purchases they had trouble covering living expenses

An interesting and rather concerning snapshot of gaming in Japan and the dominance of gacha games:

According to an annual online survey by Japan's SMBC Consumer Finance, a staggering 18.8% or nearly 1 in 5 Japanese people aged in their 20s have had trouble covering living expenses because they spent so much money on in-game purchases:

The rate was higher for men than for women, but it still applied to almost 1 in 6 women.

The survey also found that 17.9% of respondents said they would pay to have an in-game advantage, and over 20% said they "couldn't enjoy a game if I don't make in-game purchases"

Digital addiction is a huge issue

Not just in Japan

Its why things like lootboxes are getting heavily looked at and becoming part of laws because its basically gambling.

Gacha games are the worst.

Wow, I've purchased a couple of DLC's, but nothing else besides a game itself.

These gacha games are a pain in the butt! Here I am falling victim to FATE/Grand Order. :(

That's a high percent.
I wonder what the numbers are in the USA, China, UK, France, Australia, Germany, and some other countries.

Me, but with toys. Sort of.

It's an addiction indeed, guess it's time to treat it like a healthy issue

Predators and prey have no nationality.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

“I can’t enjoy the game if I don’t make in-game purchases.”

That’s just sad.
