Forums - Sales Discussion - Five reasons why I am not bothered by Nintendo's Switch 2 hardware and software pricing

Well for comparison, here in Canada:

Switch launched at CAD 399, BotW CAD 80 for physical edition
Switch 2 is set to launch at CAD 629 (+58%), physical games are not priced yet $80 USD is currently CAD 111 (+39%)

Canada inflation from 2017 to now is 25.7% (According to Bank of Canada)

So Nintendo prices are going up over double the inflation rate here for the console, 150% over for games.

And no discounted Nintendo games here, second hand only.

(Correction, MKW is $80 in USD)

So you think it's ok that Kirby and the forgotten land  (a nearly 3 year old game) is priced at 80$? 10$ more than most brand new games? There is no reasoning to explain or justify that.

Is a newer game inherently going to be better? Did Forgotten Land get less fun?

Sony got dragged for 70$ games and deservedly so.
Nintendo is doing 80$ games (and 90$ physical). If you are okay with or much worse trying to defend it, then you are just a Fanboy and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Astro is cool, but DKBananza blows that out-of-the-water.

Sorry, what?

I already preordered DKBananza, but I really doubt that it will be better than Astro Bot.

Then we don't need to take you seriously, because you're just spreading misinformation. 90$ games do not exist. Hell, even €90 aren't that commonplace, as many European retailers are selling Switch 2 games at less than MSRP.

Also, there are more types of people than just fanboys and haters. Many people just want to play the new Mario.

I think your OP is fine because it is about 'I' but in a global context it is kind of clear that it will be harder for Switch 2 to win customers and I just don't like when a companies sees that their audience isn't growing so instead of creating extensions or grow their audience they choose we will ask more money from our fans with potentially price hikes in the future.

I preorder the Switch with Mario Kart World, so I don't really care about MK world's specific price. PS games are 80 euro at launch on PS store so Nintendo matching that is to be expected. I do think the accessories are overpriced, considering the triggers don't have hall effect and the triggers are digital. Yet the Pro controller is more expensive than Dualsense.

The majority of the launch games for Switch 2 are old multi-plat games. It's okay if you're heavily invested in the Nintendo ecosystem but to say that PS5 and XBSX have next to nothing but Nintendo is marketing third party games that the other platforms had in 2020 makes your statement look foolish.

I’m more referring to first-party releases. (Though playing those third-party releases on-the-go certainly has a degree of novelty to it. You can say Steam Deck and such can already do this, but your average consumer doesn’t own these alternative systems.) Nintendo’s slamming their fist down with two juggernauts within the first two months of release…meanwhile, after five years, PS5 has nothing more than a collection of asset-reusing sequels. Astro is cool, but DKBananza blows that out-of-the-water.

I think you're simply trying too hard to dismiss valid criticisms Rol. Your points are fair enough for explaining why you aren't bothered by the pricing, but labeling those who disagree as trolls and haters makes it very hard to take you seriously. It's a lot of money to a lot of people and pricing isn't as simple as looking at inflation and "doing the math" (which doesn't add up anyways in many regions).

And even if you think the console and new game prices are fine (which I wouldn't strongly disagree with) you gotta at least be able to see why people are criticising stuff like selling a "welcome tour" seperately or the €80 "remasters" which are actually just the same game using the better capabilities of your new system you already paid for (I'm talking bout BotW & TotK before you throw the expansion argument out there). It's fine if you don't have a problem with it, but don't pretend those who do are in the wrong.

The thread is working fine. What I am dismissive of is the outrage that Nintendo has to drop the price to turn this supposedly sinking ship around. The valid criticism constitutes a minority, but it gets lost easily among all the hot takes that can't be taken seriously.

Like I said, this forum is small enough that people know each other. The tone in the replies here matches up with who you'd suspect is either a troll or a hater, and who isn't. We don't learn anything new, but there's no harm in seeing a demonstration of it. Agreement with my OP isn't a requirement to escape the troll and hater labels, but how you respond clearly depends on who you are.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.
