Forums - General Discussion - De-extinction: Biotech company "brings back" the Direwolf

The Dire Wolf went extinct 10,000 years ago; Colossal Biosciences decided to try to bring them back.

Using preserved DNA and gene editing, the company took a living relative, the Grey Wolf, and rewrote its genetic code to match the ancient samples, using domestic dogs as surrogate mothers.

The resulting puppies, Romulus and Remus, have stirred considerable debate.

Humankind can do some amazing things when they're not killing each other.

In ten years:

"Welcome.......to Jurassic Park"

Can't wait to eat some Mammoth burgers.

...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.

Saw this news last week. It's pretty cool what we can do, but if we fuck the planet anyway, kind of makes you wonder what is the point to bring them back only to perhaps be extinct again.

He looks so cute on the picture, I just want to hug him.

Interesting for sure but I've done some reading And they're just designer puppies mimicking Dire Wolfs lol

Imagine being out in the woods, and running into this thing....
I know.. its just a slightly bigger northern wolf (~70kg), however... even just a small wolf is scary enough imo.

What's next? Saber-tooth tiger?

If its like 99% there.... that's close enough to the real thing imo.
Calling it a Wolf pup mimicking a Dire Wolf, feels like a undersell, of what it is.

The pictures from Time.com are at like 5months old.
Supposedly they are fully grown like in 1,5 years or something.
These guys are getting over 150lb (when fully grown).

These are wild animals, and if they want to keep them that way they probably tried to limit human contact with them.
You run into a wolf in the wild, hugging it, seems like a bad idea.

Yeah, as Otter said, designer puppies. Dire Wolfs are distant cousins of wolfs, and are more akin to jackals and coyotes.

Well we slowly get a better understanding of the question "Why does mankind exist".

Did not god create us in his image? So we are practicing being just that.

I'm not religious, but looking from a philosopher's point of view. With god just being a metaphor for 'The Power of Creation".

And we are working on the next god as well in Artificial Intelligence and a whole new existence with that.
