Forums - Nintendo - Prime 4: 'Switch' control methods on the fly

Gamespot has revealed in its hands-on preview of Metroid Prime 4: Switch 2 Edition that the game will allow "switch" control methods on the fly rather than forcing players to change them in a menu.  Prime 3-style gyro-controls are also included in that.  You enter gyro-aiming when using the lock-on mechanic and can switch to muse mode at any time by putting the joycon 2 on a surface on its side.

"It's complex without feeling complicated. When exploring the world you'll mostly rely on the traditional dual-stick control scheme. When you lock-on to an enemy, your Joy-Con automatically converts to the gyro pointer mode like Prime Trilogy or Remastered. And most impressively, at any point you can simply put your Joy-Con controller down on a surface and it instantly converts to mouse mode, letting you control it that way. No menu selection or toggle required. It's a heck of a trick."

The Switch 2 version is clearly the optimal way to play, both in terms of control options and presentation.  Nintendo states on its page about the Switch 2 editions that Prime 4 will have improved textures on Switch 2 in addition to the HDR and the option to choose to play in 4k or with 120 fps, so it will have more visual improvements than any other Switch 2 edition game revealed so far.

One thing that I still want to be cleared up is whether Nintendo expect people to use the mouse on their thigh or?

The mouse mode seems highly limiting as it will make face buttons hard to reach but could be used for select precision specifc moments of aiming etc

I'd love to know how well it works on arm rests and difference in fabric, like I imagine sitting down on the couch just scrolling aiming on the arm rest with just as much accuracy as on a table, lazer mouses were great for this when I was laptop gaming, it's so freeing. Easily Switch 2's best feature after HDR if it works on any surface without accuracy loss.

"Kouichi Kawamoto, producer of the new console, said because gaming with a mouse requires a desk, Nintendo tinkered with the optical features so players can use it on their pants."

"While the slim build of the controllers will cause discomfort for extended play like this, they operate as smoothly as any computer mouse. Aiming lasers in “Metroid Prime 4,” the long-awaited entry in the firm’s sci-fi series, feel just as crisp and precise as a PC game."

That is actually shear brilliance.

People can't be this clueless in 2025. Place the joycon in mouse mode on your Desk or table and attach the Switch 2 to your computer monitor.

If you don't have a desk or table setup, use the JoyCon in controller mode, as the mouse mode is not required. Simple
