How what?

If you mean how did Switch and PS5 sell roughly the same, it's simply that the audience for these kind of waifu games skew more towards the PS audience traditionally.

Not really.

  • [NSW] Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key (Koei Tecmo, 03/23/23) – 31,140 (New)
  • [PS4] Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key (Koei Tecmo, 03/23/23) – 17,240 (New)
  • [PS5] Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key (Koei Tecmo, 03/23/23) – 14,787 (New)

The ratio of PS to Nintendo isn't that much different, it's just in the mean time most of the PS4 audience has shifted to PS5.

Yes, but it is now more towards PS than NSW. 50% for Ryza 3 ratio to 57% for Yumia. A 7% marketshare shift towards PS.

And in the time between these releases Ps5 has sold 3.5m in 2 years (to China according to some people).

NSW sold 7m in 2 years.

If this is true, it really should keep skewing towards the NSW. So that is why I ask.

How?

7% isn't a big shift, it's probably just that when the appeal of your game is the sexy waifu, the console that shows her in better graphics has the edge. Switch is winding down and the Switch version of Yumia is a bit rough technically.

2nd [PS5] Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist and the Phantasmagoria of Remembrance
27,810 (New) total 27,810 / Koei Tecmo Games / March 21, 2025

3rd [Switch] Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist and the Phantasmagoria of Remembrance
26,315 (New) total 26,315 / Koei Tecmo Games / March 21, 2025

7th [PS4] Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist and the Land of Phantasmagoria
6,949 (New) total 6,949 / Koei Tecmo Games / March 21, 2025

How?

I read on Installbase that the Switch version is kinda rough, and there was a demo on eShop before release. Releasing on the same week as Xeno X doesn't help -- there's going to be an overlap of audiences.

Makes more sense then if it is a rough port. Thanks.

Do the MLB games usually release in Japan? Now that Ohtani and a bunch of other Japanese players are dominating in America, I can see the series growing in popularity for a few years.

229 XBSXS units sold is insane. That feels abnormally small for Xbox in JP, no? Also, NSW seems to be surviving. Sitting at 30k certainly is a bit reassuring after last week.

Xbox has never been that big in JP. As I recall, the XB1 was under 100 per week for most of its time in the market.

While the Xbox brand never was really big in Japan, the XS last dropped below 300 in spring of 2023 and before that in early 2021. So yes, it is abnormally low for the console.

Comparing to the XBO, which the XS has long outsold already in Japan, doesn't really work here. It's like comparing the Vita to the PS3 in the west; while the PS3 underperformed somewhat it's nowhere near the level of the Vita. I mean, the XBO was so bad in Japan that the massive Flop that was the Virtual Boy outsold it there.

His comment was that 229 "feels abnormally small for Xbox in JP", which I took to mean XBox as a whole. And historically for XBox in JP it does not feel abnormally small.

The Series consoles have honestly been abnormally high in JP, since the Series has been selling below XB1 in the rest of the world. It seems maybe JP is now catching up to the rest of the world in terms of slowing Series sales.
