While the Xbox brand never was really big in Japan, the XS last dropped below 300 in spring of 2023 and before that in early 2021. So yes, it is abnormally low for the console.

Comparing to the XBO, which the XS has long outsold already in Japan, doesn't really work here. It's like comparing the Vita to the PS3 in the west; while the PS3 underperformed somewhat it's nowhere near the level of the Vita. I mean, the XBO was so bad in Japan that the massive Flop that was the Virtual Boy outsold it there.

His comment was that 229 "feels abnormally small for Xbox in JP", which I took to mean XBox as a whole. And historically for XBox in JP it does not feel abnormally small.

The Series consoles have honestly been abnormally high in JP, since the Series has been selling below XB1 in the rest of the world. It seems maybe JP is now catching up to the rest of the world in terms of slowing Series sales.
