Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is your favourite genre, your favourite genre?

I spent most of 2024 playing...

My favourite genre 7 63.64%

Playing games outside of my favourite genre 1 9.09%

Playing no games at all 3 27.27%

Total:11

I'll go first. I love third person action games like Sekiro, Stellar Blade, Nioh 2, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty etc (Bloodborne counts too and souls has it's moments in later titles like Elden Ring) because they bring about an intense level of focus, some like DMC or God of War need to be on higher difficulties to gain this but it's the same deal.

I get an intense high from having learned deep mechanics and a deep combat system, bosses movesets and all the timing to be able to play under pressure and have it all, eventually work almost without effort. I love the win but more so I love the learning process and then the subsequent playthorughs that make you feel like a god after your brain starts seeing the matrix and what once was difficult becomes second nature. It's a state of bliss.

Real-Time Strategy.

Because I like to think, plan and learn and do multiple things at the same time and sometimes on extremely large scales.

Yeah I get ya on this, that multitasking that becomes like a juggling monkey of activity in your brain is pretty amazing.

How deep do you go? Starcraft or deeper like Civ or perhaps even deeper like Stellaris or Europa Universalis. Damn I wish I had the patience to stick through a campaig in Stellaris, it's so much fun.

StarCraft is definitely amazing. So is Age of Empires... Which I was playing on Zone.com back in 1997 online using my super speedy 28.8kbps dial-up modem. (Comparatively my internet is now 100Mbps which is 100,000Kbps or 3,472x times faster!)
Amazingly us Australians got a free copy of Age of Empires in our breakfast cereals at one point as well.

Civilization isn't real-time... But I do love my turn based strategy games, most notably Alpha Centauri and Master of Orion 2, they are almost perfect Turn based strategy games in my eyes if you can get past the dated visuals.

But games like Total Annihilation, Dark Reign, Sacrifice, Battlezone 2, Command and Conquer, Dungeon Keeper, Company of Heroes, Homeworld, Dune 2000, KKND (Krush Kill 'N' Destroy) definitely float my goats... And Sins of a Solar Empire I rank stupidly high.

Hmm, what even is my favorite genre? I guess it would have to be RPGs.
It starts with character creation, at least with deeper RPGs. I get to make my own character, create something unique. Nobody else will play with a 100% similar character, especially when you factor in all the loot I find and manage and the choices I make. My run of the game will be one of a kind.
I love the feeling of my personal choices going against the world that the game sets up against me. It *feels* personal. I'm not Kratos or whatever, I'm me, my character. What would I do in this situation? What outcomes will follow?
Good RPGs make the world feel alive and create a sense of freedom, or at least a good illusion of it. There's no immediate rush to get on with anything, just do what you feel like at the moment, until it's time to get back to the main quest.
I enjoy the feeling of roaming the land, meeting characters, having conversations with them and setting things right according to how I judge them. I guess it gives you a sense of control you wish you had in the uncertainties of real life.

Oh man. Dungeon Keeper is the best, I was hoping since popular games from the 90s all got unofficial sequels, Two point Hospital for example as a spiritual successor to Theme Hospital that we'd see games like this get the same treatment but I suppose that's more likely cause it can work so well on console, can't say an RTS like Total Annihilation would work well. Whoever owns dungeon keeper would make some good money to do a remake.

Yeah but why? Choose one and explain what it is that makes you love it, or all of them. A little thought experiment that'll help you understand yourself better when making purchasing decisions. Like I want to play every action game that comes out but now there are so many I have to focus in on the aspects that I love about them, otherwise I'd be buying every soulsborne imitation to great disapointment like was the case with Lies of P or anything with flashy combat like Wu chang Fallen Feathers which is yet to release but I know now it isn't the fit for me.

Damn, that's kinda deep. I'm with you on that, I love RPGs for the same reasons. The feel of crafting your own way through too even if that means you'll miss a load of content. I want an RPG that let's me kill a character tied to an hour of side questing or talk my way out of fights completely and avoiding combat entirely or for the most part.

RPG

I like gameplay and the length of the games.

Seeing numbers popping up and leveling up feels good.
