Hmm, what even is my favorite genre? I guess it would have to be RPGs.
It starts with character creation, at least with deeper RPGs. I get to make my own character, create something unique. Nobody else will play with a 100% similar character, especially when you factor in all the loot I find and manage and the choices I make. My run of the game will be one of a kind.
I love the feeling of my personal choices going against the world that the game sets up against me. It *feels* personal. I'm not Kratos or whatever, I'm me, my character. What would I do in this situation? What outcomes will follow?
Good RPGs make the world feel alive and create a sense of freedom, or at least a good illusion of it. There's no immediate rush to get on with anything, just do what you feel like at the moment, until it's time to get back to the main quest.
I enjoy the feeling of roaming the land, meeting characters, having conversations with them and setting things right according to how I judge them. I guess it gives you a sense of control you wish you had in the uncertainties of real life.
