Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How would you plan Switch 2's launch year to be the most successful?

Doubt it. But if ya wanna make a long term bet. It won't surpass it. People have their switches, economy is a disaster which doesn't matter for hardcore gamers but it does for the parents who'd buy a switch as a party device. Let's meet back here in 3 years.

People already had their PS4s yet they still bought PS5s through the economic downturn of the last few years. People continued to buy the Wii through the financial crash of 2008. Video game systems are notoriously resistant to economic turmoil. And the primary audience for Switch isn't "parents buying it as a party device", if it was we wouldn't be seeing single players games like BOTW, TOTK, Mario Odyssey, etc selling at sky high levels.

Don't mind him, there's a subset of people that genuinely thinks the main contributor to the Switch success overall came from the family and kids, while we know from previous data sets that the system is mostly favored by people in their 20's-30's.

The old Nintendo stereotype does not die so easily it seems.

Family and kids may be the main buyers and audience NOW... 8 years in, going on Year 9, with the successor around the corner, which is why I don't think Switch 1 is going to fall off drastically once Switch 2 comes out. It is going decline and we will be able to tell, there's no doubt about it. But it's not "cliff theory." Because the audiences and people buying those systems are going to be drastically different...

The people buying Switch 2 at launch and Year 1 are going to be the dedicated gamers and loyal, diehard Nintendo fans like many of us are who bought the Switch 1 at launch or Year 1-2 because they're that committed to the product, actively follow it, and talk about it on forums and websites such as this one.

The people buying Switch 1 in Year 8-9 and onwards are the very casual, average Joe and Janes, parents who just want something for the kids and family members who are new to gaming and want to hold them over. Now when Nintendo reveals more info about Switch 2 and we know its launch price, and how many games are backwards compatible, some of those parents and casual consumers may decide to just hold off and save their money to invest on the platform that they will be supporting in the future. But some, dare I say, the majority, of those consumers, will just jump on Switch 1 now because it's already out, it has so many games already, it's easy to jump into, and it's convenient. And if Nintendo actually gives all the Switch 1 models price cuts, that many more consumers will decide to jump in right away to get themselves started, then when the time is right, will jump to Switch 2 in Years 3-4-5, right when that system is at it's peak.

Thank you for stating facts! 20- 30 is the main audience for Switch and we all know that. And thats older than a lot of PS (Xbox) users who are often 13- 19 years old teenies.

$400 USD would be the sweet spot for price I feel; higher than that and it starts to get a bit pricey for low income buyers, while any less doesn't seem feasible given inflation and the fact Nintendo always sell hardware at a profit. It would still sell at $450-500, just not as much.

A $400 Switch 2 with a packed first year including Mario Kart 9 would sell basically whatever Nintendo can ship for its first year.

They really just need a Mario kart and 3D Mario in the first year that feel like big leaps and innovations from their predecessors, and that should be good enough. Of course, ideally they’d have some Nintendo casual game that appeals to tons of non-gamers and gets them to buy a switch 2 in there too, but that’s easier said than done.

If the hardware is powerful enough you can chare good money! If a PS/ Xbox can be expensive, a Nintendo system also can! Price is not everything: The PSP soon was cheaper than the DS (especially Street PSP), the Vita soon dropped to the same price as the 3DS. Did any Sonyhandheld outsold its direct competitior? No? Price has nothing to do with sucess, otherwise the PSP would be ~150 million wich would have really made it "the walkman of the 21 century". But we know how it ended...

It would still sell well at $450-500, just less because some people simply don't have that kind of money to spend on a relative luxury like a console. Nintendo has always made sure their consoles are affordable.

If you look at the Switch back in 2017 it was very expensive. 330€ for the Handheld itself. 90€ for a pair of Joy Cons, 70€ for a Pro controller, 25€ for an original protection case... compared to that, an Xbox SS seems like a steal. Add in the fact you can get a new PS5 (no disc) for ~400€ the Switch was/ is less afordable than you think. I am sure including accesoirs and games i spent ~10.000€ for the Switch all together in te last 8 years! For the PS5 i own less than 40 games and we are in it's 5th year past its peak. Xbox SeX even less.

Every system has those hidden costs for controllers and accessories and such though.

$300 for a convenient hybrid system with a massive library of games is a good deal, plus the Lite cuts that down to $200.

$400 for Switch 2 would be a good deal too provided it delivers in terms of games.

And providing games like the teased Mario Kart, Metroid Prime 4, a sleuth of 3rd party games and whatever Nintendo's gonna show during the Direct for the Super Switch is exactly what's gonna happen.

I don't feel particularly fearful about their upcoming schedule considering the way they managed the end of the Switch lifespan so far.
