Forums - Sales - Famitsu sales Week 52, 2024 - Week 1, 2025 (23/12/24 - 5/1/25)

Are people forgetting PS5 is a home console? It's selling what a traditional home console been selling in Japan the last 20 years or so. N64, GC, Wii, Wii U all weren't as nearly as successful as the Switch because they were all traditional home console. Even with the price hikes, PS5 is gonna sell similar to PS3 and PS4 around 10m which is fine in Japan

Yes PS5 sales are soooo bad. It got one great year in 2023 (at least for hardware), and had a good year going this year (again only for HW) until they killed it off with a price raise. PS5 is only going to drop from here on out. Sure it will have a few games the next few years that give it a short boost and that stay in the software charts for a while, but it's looking like a system that is essentially dead from 2025 onward, especially with Switch 2 coming out soon.

Switch 2 will likely kill off Switch sales (except some Lite sales) and also kill off most of PS5 sales as well.

We are looking a future where for the next few years the PS5 will be in third place most weeks behind both Switch 2 and Switch 1.

My hypothesis about Sony is THEY WANT TO LEAVE the console market. The hardware is not making all that money, and they now are very focused in games production to sell you a colorful range of different and demanded WOKE game experiences, lol (man, they have dozens of studios and every year they buy or create some new one). They are balls deep into gaming production, so, they want to sell games, everywhere, including the PC. And having a console is now more a problem than an advantatge, cause first, they have to sell the console, and after that, they need to sell the games. No need to sell any hardware if they become full PC developers. But, it seems they have fear to lose its fanbase in a severe whiplash effect, as Sega suffered after its way out of the console production...

... so they are probably trying to refocus its game subsidiary from console maker... to a "game-streaming based hardware" maker. More easy to manufacture. And MORE CHEAP. That would explain why Sony is bragging all the time in the media about the huge success of PS Portal sells (a "success" hilariously false),...

... and would also explain all that "AI against the input button lag" crap they are patenting now: That seems a technology TO HELP some Sony "STADIA-like" service to not sucking hard in its gameplay experience.
Otherwise... an input lag in local console gaming is... extremely low (i mean... we are not playing 3D PC games in that INSANE second half of the 90s, were everything lagged hard because every 3D game needed "the last minute CPU and graphics card in the market" to have a decent gameplay experience... or the frames per second could be ridiculously low (I remember a demo of the game "Pod" in a decent Pentium without MMX and no 3D card... "beautiful" experience. You could count the polygons one by one during "a race" XD).

Didn't see anyone mentioning it, but with 2024 finished, we can now state: Nintendo has outsold Sony for 20 years straight! And with the arrival of the Switch 2, Nintendo will probably continue to oversell Sony for way more years to come

I don't think the Wii U outsold PS4 in Japan. If it did then that's only in Japan. It's like saying Sony has outsold Nintendo in Europe for 30 years straight

Damn, A lot of "Sony is doomed" and "Nintendo beating Sony" posts on this thread.
Guess a lot of people still haven't recovered from the fact that Sony have absolutely massacred Nintendo with PS1 and PS2 right out the gate.

Relax, Nintendo is at the top now and deservedly so.

As for Playstation's performance in japan,
Sony doesn't care about Japan and the Japanese have no reason to care about Playstation.
They don't have a single studio working on an IP that caters to the Japanese audience.
And to make things worse, they have significantly raised the price of the Playstation 5 multiple times which is now 2.5 times more than the Switch.
At this point it's quite clear that Sony aren't even trying when it comes to Japan.

Which isn't a good thing that Sony doesn't care about Japan

A lot of mid-range games from Japanese studios are skipping playstation either at launch or altogether as a result, and not only are western fans unhappy about that, they are blaming everyone but Sony for that.

We are seeing it with rune factory, professor Layton, last defence academy, and dragon quest monsters: the dark prince

In the past, shin megami tensei 5, monster hunter rise, harvestella, monster hunter stories 2, beyonetta 2, 3 and origins.

All those games have seen varying amounts of frustration at not being given a playstation port at launch or at all, but the anger is always directed to

Nintendo, for paying to steal games from playstation, and holding them hostage (I have seen people say those)

Or developers/publishers, who are being anti consumer, by choosing not to give playstation gamers these games

No one wants to hold playstation accountable for their failure in Japan as it affects a lot more then just their Japanese sales. It's affecting the developers who want to make games but if they have to choose what console to make it for, there is only 1 option now, and it's not the company that "doesn't care about Japan"

This actually isn't true. Games like Professor Layton & Dragon Quest Monsters have historic audiences and been exclusive to Nintendo handhelds and skipped playstation even at PSPs peak. Playstation has no problem with Japanese software support, it simply that Japanese audiences prefer to play on Switch and greatly value Nintendo IP over any other.

Nope, DS and Wii won PSP and PS3 there.

What about the Wii U and PS4 in Japan? I don't think the Wii U outsold the PS4 in Japan every year they were completing
