What do you think of Path of Exile 2's approach?

It's basically all the options of a PC game on console, choose your resolution, upscaling style, anti aliasing style, target frame rate, sharpening etc. Which comes with the same problems, one level runs fine at higher resolutions, the next screen tears like its 2006. Stutters included.
We left it on 1440p, NIS upscaling, 60 fps target and ignore the massive screen tearing. That's on ps5 pro.

It's a beta though so I assume all that will be gone for the final release with simple quality/performance choice.

The default should at least be to go for performance mode.

There should be a balanced mode for every game like in Stellar Blade but yeah, it doesn't matter what the default is though, 30fps mode shouldn't be that chunky as it is today, it never effected the camera so badly in the past. Quality modes should feel smoother, you don't need 60fps for every type of game, specifically horror or slower paced games and it would be nice if all Quality modes were as smooth as Alan Wake 2 although I suspect there is upscaling going on to achieve it at least they tried unlike so many other devs.

I don't like it, consoles should be curated experiences. Having to choose between two or three modes is already more than we should have to. 



FPS stability every time. I am someone who constantly plays N64 games on a CRT, for crying out loud. Modern games look good enough. Give me stability.



Depends on the game.
Some games are perfectly fine at 30fps. (Elder Scrolls) due to lower paced gameplay.
Other games demand 60fps like Mario... And others demand 120fps/144fps/240fps or more like Doom.

Obviously only the PC Gaming Master Race can deliver on all the goods.

If it drops to 30 just for a few extra pixels, I would say quality all the way. I can live with a few drops though for a Performance RT mode. Since it makes the game look a lot better.

Buy does the game not feel worse for you to play? Like the camera doesn't move smoothly or characters look like they are jitterbug or God forbid, do you not notice the trailed effect from the choppiness?

Honestly no. I think people underestimate how quickly the mind adapts to a stable FPS but it depends on the execution. For example light motion blur really solves camera choppiness. Per character motion creates smoother motion with characters. Frame pacing creates good 30fps modes.

What I think is crazy is that there people who blindly pick 60fps regardless of the experience. I watched a play through of FFXVI bosses where the frame rate was fluctuating between 30fps-50fps all the time and it was one of the most nauseating experiences. Or games where the low resolution causes constant FSR artefacting (jedi survivor)

The truth with cernys statistics is that it is likely based off Sony first party where the 60fps modes are actually rock solid. But also based off player ignorance... Most gamers who I've visited  do not know when their TV has the God awful "true motion/super motion" frame interpolation software active where the software invents frames. I think their experience is more informed by how the modes are labeled then anything else.

This is why I'm all in favour of developers just building the experience they imagine with maximum optimisation

Some games I've played recently and their modes

FF16- 30fps
FFVII- 30fps (unfortunately camera is a bit choppy)
God of War Ragnarok (60fps)
Tears of the Kingdon (30fps, wish the resolution was higher though)
Kirby Forgotten land (30fps, but wish it was 60fps)





Almost always performance mode, unless it's a game where fps doesn't really matter.

The problem is that 60 fps isn't marketable in still images. For that, quality mode is more effective.
And hell, some people can't even tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps in videos. Especially not when they're not compared side by side. And they're usually not in trailers.

Not even if the videos show movement? or like a person turning the camera view?

I think most people can tell, if its a fast paced game.
