whats everyones thoughts on this?

Principle art designer at Naughty Dog, gifting a drawing of Eve, to the devs at Stellerblade.
They took her and turned her ugly, basically, and the internet is in a uproar over it (basically its "the pattern" repeating).
They question if Naughty Dog can even make a beautiful or sexy woman anymore.
Will there be any beauties in intergalactic?

Supposedly the steller blade devs, didn't link/tag Naughty Dog, when they posted it.
Likely because they knew there would be backlash to the drawing, and didn't want that associated with naughty dog.
(ei. thanks for the gift... it kinda sucks... but I guess we need to post it anyways, and say thanks).

My thoughts on this since you asked is "Who actually gives a fuck what a concept artist is doing in his free time for fun" seriously, is this what we're upset about? That a concept artist made some art of a character he likes? The developers at Stellar Blade were probably like "Cool, thanks" but gamers have to make everything fucking weird, Lol.

"The internet is in an uproar"

I've not heard a single thing about it until this post and you've linked a YouTube video with 2.2k views...Honestly JRPGFan...I'll say once again that you're far too invested in these rage-baiters, I think you need to seriously detox your timeline of these losers and recheck who you're following, I've pointed out multiple times that you've been tricked by these sorts of losers but you're still posting them and giving them air.

Yes, Naughty Dog can still make beautiful women, what a ridiculous assertion, don't act like Stellar Blade fans are busy looking at her face either, Lmfao. Which Imho her face looks underaged but what these people are focused on is her tits and ass and even the concept artist has kept those still proportionally huge, Lmao. He did mention in his Instagram post that he intentionally made her angry though.

To some people, the Intergalactic character IS attractive.

"Supposedly the Stellar Blade devs didn't link Naughty Dog when they posted it" - Wrong.

They don't need to mention Naughty Dog at all because it's not Naughty Dog making it but a concept artist who works for them, who happens to be a fan of Stellar Blade, doing it in his spare time. Are we really upset about a dude who is a fan of something making some art in his spare time? FFS

On top of all of this, people need to understand the difference between a concept artist and an artist, I've seen literally hundreds of concept art for videogames that look nothing like the final product, hence the name "concept" Lol. Here is one of his concept arts for Joel in The Last of Us 2.

Here are some of his other female concept arts.

More juvenile outrage. Everything looks pretty congruent to the source material but the face which you could chalk up to the change in style. It's not like she even looks ugly in the fan art; just, again, less like a porcelain doll.

Do you still think naughty dog are able to make a sexy character design? Or even just a normal female with femine traits?
Like... what are the chances of there being one, in intergalactic, that like catches on fire, all the internet loves, because shes so hot? or just really endearing because of her femininity?

I put that chance near zero..

Granted, not every game needs beautifull characters...  and it seems the western devs shy away from even trying.
Meanwhile look at what the chinese devs do, and notice how often it seems to pay off.

We're still talking about Naughty Dog titles right? Some of the biggest selling SP titles in the world? Lol.

"Femine traits" - You mean like the massive tits she has in the concept art, her very pronounced ass? Her long slender legs? I thought these were the traits that these "gamers" were screaming for? I sure saw people losing their shit at Dragon Age not being able to do huge asses and tits, Lol. Also as I said, it is intentionally drawn in an angry pose and you can't see half her face, Lol.

It's concept art made by someone in their free time. It's not that deep. People drive themselves crazy trying to find some agenda when it's not there.

I can't even begin to take this seriously.

Why did Guerilla make Aloy look so ugly in their 2022 Holiday card?

Even if I remotely cared about something like this, and god help me if that ever happened, it's an incredibly stylized image. I bet if you looked at early concept art of a lot of characters that you think are attractive, you'd find that most of them don't look all that nice. You'll find some that do, sure. But I'd bet you would find a lot that really don't.

Elena Fischer does not look as pretty as her final game model.

"Beautiful" is different from person to person.

I think Dina and Ellie in TLOU Part II are attractive women. You might not agree with that, that's okay.

I would largely say that ND makes more grounded, but still attractive characters.

Some men are into this look:

Personally I'm not. But some men are 100% into that.

That's fine if that's not what you prefer to see. People aren't wrong for preferring characters that look more like Aloy than a barbie doll. People aren't wrong for being attracted to different things.

Why are these East Asian games so woke? Why did they have to make the characters so ugly? You think SBI really got to them!?

Hmm, So you are now defining a new definition for woke.  Before it was stuff people did not like, now you are adding advertising to the list as well.  Its not like there are hundreds of ads that advertise to groups of people of different race, genders skin tones etc so why is this any different.  You say it feigns social consciousness but that isn't correct.  What it does is try to sell a feature that Google believes will target a group which is people with dark skin to buy their product.

The fact you label this as woke seems like you will label anything woke that doesn't advertise to white people.  There are hair products, lotion, food, cloths just to name a few that advertise to non white people so would all of those be considered woke to you as well.

The first photos Google shows in the ad had poor lighting. As a solution, Google sells some feature called real tone on their Pixel phone rather than tell their target audience that cameras need good lighting to take good pictures.

I view this like an insurance salesman selling volcano insurance in an area with no volcano close by. A dishonest salesman will show the horrors of volcano eruptions to their target audience and hide the fact that there is no volcano in the area.

I'm calling Google dishonest in the ad and to top this dishonesty off, they add a fake veneer of social consciousness to their marketing. I find this appeal-to-emotion marketing obnoxious. And while I dislike using the word 'woke', if I had to use it, this ad would qualify as 'woke' in my book.

To answer your question, no. Any product aimed at someone who isn't white is NOT what I consider 'woke'.

It's the deceptive element in Google's ad that I'm offended by.

Even if you believe its deceptive which mind you just about any advertisement for any product can be, you seem to only be defining this one as woke because it targets a group that is non white.  A deceptive marketing or ad would just be deceptive not woke.  What I am saying is that you are expanding the definition of woke to basically fit anything you do not like. So in this instance you do not like Google advertisement and feel its deceptive which mind you is just your opinion since one you are not a dark skinned person so you really cannot test to see if this actually works as advertise.  Actually now that I written the above, I guess for you woke is "Stuff I do not like, that represent a group I have no affiliation with".

Oh crap, the woke crowd is adding in characters that do not look like pin up dolls and concept artist taking an existing character adding emotion of anger to it and now there is this huge internet crazy going on because the artist works at ND. Do not worry my Anti woke friends because as long as we have gamers who want their female characters to look like pin up dolls, there will be games made to support you. If ever you feel to go into your happy place, you can play the game "The Last Descendant" which has a number of pin up woman characters and its free to play. Not only that but you can dress up your dolls in bikinis, revealing outfits you name it.

Kinda looks like stellar blade but with the ability to emote. More Bayonetta less like a doll.

...

I feel the need to chime in here with my 2 cents. Here's my thought on the following 3 pictures:

All three are examples of impressionism.  What's that you say? See the definition below.

I legitimately feel like we need to move on from the 'definition' of woke and start asking people, regardless of how they see 'wokeness', why they think it's a bad thing.

Because that's where we start to really peel off the mask and make it abundantly clear how callous and heartless and ignorant these people are.

Even if you think it's a case of 'forced representation ruining the integrity of the medium', I have to ask...how is that a bad thing? Change hurts sometimes. And it's been a boy's club for so long that if we need the artistic value of the medium to be taken seriously we NEED To diversify. We need non-traditional roles. we need to open up games to everyone. Women deserve to have unfiltered representation. Sometimes that means supermodel babes, sometimes that means homely badasses and neither are bad UNLESS you feel entitled to only have YOUR Fantasies fulfilled (As in, either playing as a strong muscly man or being able to gawk at the supermodel ass). If forced inclusion and woke themes are ruining the medium...then it WILL correct itself in time. If people genuinely do stop buying games that have progressive themes, the money hungry corporations will ABSOLUTELY stop making them, or at least find ways to cater to the insecure boys that are complaining.

The problem is a feeling of entitlement. Boys feel entitled to stare at girls or pretend to be masculine men. Boys feel entitled to be the only person who's sexuality or gender are valid.

And I think this is proven even by something like starfield giving you the OPTION to have trans pronouns. Not forcing it. Not making it a big deal. Just having an option so cis people can chose that option and non-cis people can chose whatever they want. I see no universe where adding options without taking away from anyone while broadening the horizons of the medium is a bad thing. Yet dudes will still get memed to hell over 'FUCKING PRONOUNS'. WE haven't even played Intergalactic or Witcher IV but people are bitching because 'ew, female protagonist I don't want to fuck and that's bad' or 'Ciri's mature now, She's no longer the teenager I want to fuck' (yuck, by the way).

So yeah, we need to get past what woke means and start asking people why they think it's a bad thing...because that's where the shittiness really starts to come out. And that's the ultimate direction the conversation is heading when people ask 'what is woke', because any time it's asked, they have to come to terms with the reality that they're actively stifling cultural progress for their own entitlement issues. or just straight up bigotry.

You wouldn't listen to a explanation anyways.
You would twist words... give your own explanations for what your assumptions of people are (like in your post above).
Label people, with names instead.

This thread has been about, not just the "what is woke", but also people saying why they don't want it in games.

Your response has been to write posts like you just did, all thread long.
And apparently, you didn't take away anything anyone said (because their views don't matter to you).
This is just a thread for you to berate others.

Fact of the matter is, most of the world isn't as progressive as you are.

"If forced inclusion and woke themes are ruining the medium...then it WILL correct itself in time. If people genuinely do stop buying games that have progressive themes, the money hungry corporations will ABSOLUTELY stop making them,.."

This is the hope, of the anti-woke side.
If enough games that are super woke, and or play bad (because of it), they at least get punished for making a bad game.

Runa216 said:

at this point I just sort of hope the whole world burns if those are the values you and so many others like to valorize.

Your take on this subject is really extreme.
You get that right?

The hypocritical projection here genuinely makes it hard to even consider responding. I don't even know what to say when your strongest 'argument' is "All those things you called me out for...you do, actually!" It's the modern equivalent of "I know you are but what am I?"

I have read plenty of arguments, debates, points, and opinions and as a person who actually cares about people who don't look, feel, or act like me and can empathize with people who don't live my experience (I'm a blonde-haired, blue-eyed, white male that passes for cis and hetero), I've found almost none of them to have any merit. As A result I find it hard to argue most points because they're so far removed from reality or so AGGRESSIVELY ignorant of the facts and context. Most of the points, not just here but all over the internet, are so astoundingly foolish and devoid of any logic or backing that there's no room to reach some sort of common ground.

For example, did you know some people are STILL Saying Imane Khalief (I don't know if that's how you spell her name) is actually a man? Even though she was born with a vagina and is by all means a woman who just has some elevated testosterone? Yeah, there's no argument there, these people are just flat out wrong. "You're factually wrong" isn't enough to convince anyone because they're so ingrained with what they WANT to believe (Again, the simple, wrong answer) that facts elude them.

And you are no better. You keep saying shit and most of it is so foolish I don't bother directly addressing it. From what I Can tell you are one of those 'if it doesn't appeal to me PERSONALLY then it has no right to be part of the medium' types. You encapsulate everything I've been ranting about, even if not a 1:1 example.

So I don't even begin to know how to argue with you. You don't like a thing. Good for you. Would you like a cookie or something? You don't want to see unattractive women and appear to feel that this is an affront to you personally and the medium as a whole. What do I even say to that? "Okay, then don't play it and go fap to some gacha waifu game"? I mean, that's the answer, but instead of simply saying 'this isn't for me' and moving on, you seem to think it's ruining the medium. I genuinely don't know how to teach you that you are not the only person who's tastes matter.

I don't like Phoenix wright, I personally think everything about those games is dumb as hell. I hate the writing, I hate the style, I hate the Saturday morning cartoon version of how legal proceedings work. I hate it so much...but I don't bitch about it because I see others like it. My roommates love it. And I'm glad it exists because it means that the medium is healthy. IT's not for me but it has an audience.

Same with Monster Hunter. Those games are monstrously popular and I do not understand why. I hate the controls, I hate the gameplay loop, I hate the animations and on a personal level I hate hunting (I even feel bad about it in games like Red Dead), but I don't think those games shouldn't exist. I don't see the appeal but they make a lot of people happy so I am glad that they exist.

I don't tend to like a lot of indie games that are poignant and deep and meaningful unless they also have really fun gameplay like Celeste. But again, I'm incredibly glad they exist because Video Games are an art form and that means EVERYONE gets to express themselves and feel represented. That means everyone deserves to feel like they matter or that the world is listening.

Sometimes that means bald women. Sometimes that means various ethnicities that aren't what you're used to. Sometimes that means people who aren't straight, don't identify with the sex they were born with, or don't engage in traditional paradigms. That is what 'woke' is, the idea that change needs to happen to make the world a better place for everyone. It's not everyone else's fault that the people this medium primarily catered to for decades are insecure, selfish, entitled brats. It's not a gay black trans woman's fault that a straight white male doesn't want anyone else to sit at the same table as him. THAT is why being 'woke' is a good thing, because we want the table to offer a seat to anyone and everyone who wants a meal, not just the fuckers who are already fat off gorging for the last 30 years.

THAT is why I'm always so fucking angry about all this. I'm so sick of hearing entitled brats complaining that others get to feel like they matter so they frame it as oppression on their part so they can feel justified in making a hostile environment for anyone who dares approach.
