Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony confirms PS2 has sold over 160 million

Sony probably isn't lying (because if that ever came out it would be embarrassing beyond belief and maybe even criminal, and a 'web designer' just basically quoting Jim Ryan without fact checking would be immensely amateurish), but it is slightly annoying that they're still vague about it. I get that a graphic, or special website in this case, made mainly for PR purposes doesn't need to give a precise number down to the last console, but an update to an official shipment report or something somewhere would be good.

Yeah, the Nintendo site is clearly sales figures oriented, and they barely even round the figures.
So web designers were presumably given the figures beforehand, with the primary purpose of relaying them.

The Playstation site is about the history of the systems. And there are different ways to highlight the journey. Sales being one factor.

The Nintendo site also gets updated after every financial report, so it's probably linked to it or maintained by some internal department instead of a mere web designer.

Take your own advice because it doesn't align with reality. Nintendo doesnt care but to say Sony doesn't looks ridiculous. They could have announced this in 2018, yet decided against lol. Did they not know, despite it being a platform discontinued in 2013? A prior president says it randomly on a podcast and now all of a sudden they cant wait to tell the world? You don't think they are aware of Switch? Sony has a video celebrating the history of PS and when they start talking about the future of PS, they start talking about a platform they don't own? You think Nintendo would ever start talking about PS in a celebratory video about Nintendo's history? Literally another section of their site still says 155 as of 2012. I get it, the defense force is out in full force for PS but no need to quote others on something thats very reasonable to accuse them of. The evidence is stacked against them and yet they still reframe from being fully open about it.

"All of a sudden they can't wait to announce it to the world" by waiting 8 months after he made the comment?

And "announcing it to the world" by not having it anywhere on their Twitter, but only viewable after visiting their website (they didn't even promote the website article as of me writing this), click on 3 different links, and then having to scroll down half the page?

I don't care about defense forces as long as they actually consider the logic surrounding their argument.
When someone doesn't even make an attempt, they're just letting their emotions rule them.

The shipment periods near the end of PS2's production were lumped in together with PS3 and Vita. This continued for Vita, presumably to mask its poor sales. Xbox did similar things with some of their underperforming systems, etc.
Grouping them together like that lead to the theoretical range for Vita being as ridiculously wide as 50% more or less.

If they revealed the exact final PS2 numbers, it would unmask the Vita figures.
While that's not much of an issue today, Vita was still in production in 2018.

I didn't suggest that there's not a single higher up at Sony that cares at all. I said not even remotely close to the people that are being emotional about it now.
So they're not likely to have a press conference about it years later. Jim Ryan mentioned it in passing on a podcast.
And now it's PlayStation's 30th Anniversary.

The question for any serious person was never if Sony were maliciously making it up.
It was whether Ryan mispoke. Did he remember the correct figure off the top of his head? Was he rounding up, or down? Etc.

With it being on their 30th Anniversary website, it means that someone at Sony signed off on this.

Also Sony is in what position? The same Sony that told their own employees to do better with their profit margins or the same Sony laying people off?

Lines up with what I said about their only real care being money.
They wouldn't be highly paid excecs if they weren't hyper focused on how to best make profit.

What? No they literally announced the PS2 had sold 155.1 as of March 2012 in 2018. So if they didn't care in 2018, why do they care now? 30th anniversary? Was selling over 500 million consoles not an achievement to them in 2018 when they knew all along PS2 sold over 160 million but didn't care to annouce it. The only unsound logic is yours, grasping for straws because you know deep down it's obvious how much they care. No one is emotional about this besides Sony. That's why all of a sudden they cant wait to shout this from the rooftop now but didn't in 2018, where the PS2's sales are more relevant to the occasion because they were literally advertising a major sales feat! PS2's 160 million is actually relevant to that and not some 30th Anniversary where if it was 155 million, why would it matter? It would still be the highest selling platform in history but now all of a sudden 160 million is so important. Sony cares and so do the hurt warriors.

It does not line up with what you said because you also borderline took a jab at us saying "That's why they are in their position, and we are here." I took offense to that because nothing about PS right now I view as success. I see a stagnant/declining business.

Sony has finally updated the PS2 figures on their "Business Data & Sales" page. PS2 sell-in (shipped) data now says, "More than 160.0 million (As of March 31, 2012)." PS2 was discontinued at the very beginning of 2013.

Interesting enough this is the exact same date as when it said, "More than 155.0 million."

Now is the time to start questioning whether they are lying or not because that is absolutely unclear. Why would it be as of the same date they said before?

They have manufacturing lines and stock ready to go in case they need to add to their number.  They haven't forgotten Nintendo backstabbing them with the original PS at CES

It's "As of March 31, 2013". They forgot to adjust the date. I know how it is from my own work, you have to adjust two little things and you still forget to adjust one - that's just humanly. Probably, they will adjust the date later on.

Yeah I'm leaning towards a typo as well but it's Sony so don't be surprised if it wasn't lol. They are that invested, yet the warriors want to act like it's everybody else.

The PS2 never reached 160 million! It was at 155,1 million at march 31, 2012. This is shipped. And it explaines why they say "over 155 million sold" when they changed to sold through. Many people thought that shipments would have been at 158 million when sales where 155 million, but the difference was obviously less than 0,1 million. So people asumed that 3 million more in 2012- 2013 would be reasonable for its last 10 months bringing the total to 161 million. But after we know that 155,1 million is SHIPPED until march 2012 158- 159 million is much more realistic. Aditionally to strenghten my arguments we again have the fact that Sony NEVER announced 160 million to begin with. Even in 2018 as it was correctly stated they felt more need to highlight 500 million consoles sold than "160 million PS2". IF the PS2 reached or surpassed tgis milestone Sony would have announced it. A german webside sourced an vgchartz article back in december 2012 wrongfully claiming that the DS passed the PS2. Some days later this news was updated. Sony called them and said this was not true. Till march 2012 155,1 million PS2 units where SHIPPED (ausgefolgt= an den Handel ausgeliefert= SHIPPED). And what they said then was interesting: "Mittlerweile nähert man sich der Marke von 160 Millionen Geräten" ("Meanwhile we are nearing the mark of 160 million units").

This was at mid december 2012. Around 1 month later the system was discontinued. And NO announcement of 160 million units.
So we know as a FACT, in december 2012 Sony did NOT reach 160 million units! And seriously i doubt they did it later. I am desperatly trying to find the source. And i will update the post as soon as i found it.

To make it short: Intended or not but Sony did NOT tell the truth here!
