Tomorrow I'm going on vacation for a week. During that time, I'll only be able to play on my Switch and laptop, so I decided to log back into Nightreign to test the enchanted version of Adel The Baron of the Night form we got in today’s update
Jeez, he was always tough, but now he's H-A-R-D. Like, REALLY fucking hard. I tried to beat him eight times and failed all eight. The closest my teammates and I got was getting him below 10% HP on the fourth or fifth attempt. They removed some of the stagger effects he used to show when poisoned in the original version, and now he's fully lightning/gravity-fueled from the start of the fight. They also added some pretty wild combos and field-wide mechanics, so you really need to understand how to handle the environmental hazards
His health bar is bigger, and he hits even harder. I think, in this Everdark update, he's officially the hardest boss now
We also took on a few other bosses to test relics and builds. I played Duchess because I wanted to finish her questline. Her best relics are the ones that trigger and enhance her Restage skill. It's funny how much easier the game becomes when you know the field bosses, can predict rewards, and locate the best loot and upgrades. You can reliably finish day 2 at level 15, have all your weapons upgraded to +2, and if you get lucky, even snag a legendary weapon
Exploiting boss weaknesses (and knowing how to take advantage of every little thing stat buildups, staggers, hit windows, etc.) makes a huge difference. Tricephalos used to be a wall I used to beat him maybe once every four or five runs. Now, a coordinated team can take him down without using even half their flasks. Did we all get better? Definitely. But figuring out the “meta” is easily twice as important as raw skill
After much consideration I decided to give the game 4 stars on my backloggd which is quite a feat since I only give 4.5 and 5 stars to one or two games a year. I think Nightreign has design problems, which are kinda inherent of the type of game it is (read Roguelike), but when played as it's supposed to be played (read, in groups of 3 people with tactical combinations and resource sharing) the game truly shines and offers the best it has
I've clocked over 72 hours and have no plans to quit anytime soon. If the devs keep updating it, I'll be busy for months. The game has now reached 80% positive reviews, which is a huge jump from the 59% it had at launch. The playerbase count still high, hope Fromsoftware see this and keep releasing content
