30
- Unlike the previous titles in this series, you get to pick the order you complete some of the levels in this globe trotting adventure.
- A remaster of this game was released on the heroine’s birthday this year, in a collection with two other games in the series
- The next three games in this series will be getting the same treatment, with their release due at the same time next year.

29 - Resident Evil 2 remake
- You get a full time stalker this time round, rather than part time - meaning he appears in all scenarios.
- You get to view some familiar places from a different perspective.
- A remake of perhaps the most beloved ‘old school’ game in this horror series.

23
- One of the titular characters in this game first appeared in another game of a different genre.
- This character can take flight in both this game and the other game mentioned above, although the method in which he does so is different.
- Both of the titular characters are named after musical instruments.

22
- The name of the NTSC version of this game is surely a reference to a legendary heavy metal album.
- I mean, after all, both this game and the front cover of that album are based on Ancient Egypt.

21
- You can see the site of the final conflict draw closer and closer with each world you complete.
- Takes place on an island shaped like the head of the titular character.

20
- Duplication glitches are handy for those who don’t have the time or patience to grind for resources.

19 - Okami
- Fans of this game recently got good news.

18 (incorrect guesses - Breath of the Wild)
- A game that was responsible for shaking up one of the biggest game franchises and steering it in a different direction.

Unguessed

This may be the only game to go unguessed this year and it's not exactly a surprise, given how relatively unknown it is. I suppose rhythm games can never be mainstream, but I still think this should be more well known, because it's so ridiculously good. People often throw out the word "masterpiece" out hyperbolically, or nowadays they'll use "flawed masterpiece" to avoid making a controversial statement, but either way: Thumper is a masterpiece. And not a flawed one. This game is basically perfect at everything it tries to do. It has some of the best audio and visual design I've seen while somehow being only like 700mb and could probably run at 60fps on a calculator. Unlike most rhythm games, which have you playing along to the music, Thumper has the music playing along to you (or rather, the level design), and it feels visceral and fast-paced and thoroughly amazing throughout. I literally have zero complaints, this game is flawless.

Guessed by @UnderwaterFunktown

Nier: Automata has been hovering near the bottom of my top 20 ever since it debuted on this list four years ago, and even if this is its lowest placing yet, I wouldn't say my opinion on it has changed much in that time, it's pretty much just.. matured. I kinda miss it, but I haven't thought much about replaying it, I feel like the memory of playing through it for the first time might be more special than going through it all again.

I don't really have much to say about this one. Everyone talks about its amazing storyline and great music, and all I can really add is: yeah. It's great. I mean, I'm far from being the only person who'll make a post about it on this thread, so, hopefully y'all do it more justice.

Guessed by @Platina

I just put on this game's OST to get me in the mood to talk about it, and just listening to it and remembering how it felt to experience it for the first time has gotten me so nostalgic. This was the Pokémon game I went into like "oh look, another crappy Pokémon game I'm sure this one will be the worst one yet" but by the end I was just completely blown away. It still blows me away just thinking about it, and it's always disappointing to think of how this series reverted every step forward Black & White took and has basically never improved on those ever again. Sure, I enjoyed the next couple games after this one, even loved one of them, but it's undeniable that this one had the best storyline in the entire franchise. And man, having a good story in a Pokémon game was great. Nowadays people say you gotta "ignore the story" to enjoy a Pokémon game (kinda hard to ignore endlessly long unskippable cutscenes that get in the way of everything), but Black & White was the one time you played a Pokémon game for the story, and it ruled.

Ahem, excuse me as I continue to catch up. Have a couple of quote-based hints:

Not sure if this is a controversial statement or not, but Nier: Automata is easily the best game PlatinumGames has ever made, and a big part of that is the story. Platinum have always been great at the gameplay side of things, but their storytelling won't win any awards any time soon. On the other hand, Yoko Taro, the game's director has always had the opposite problem. His stories and characters have always been great, or at the very least interesting, but he had never before had the freedom and the budget to match his storytelling vision, until Nier: Automata. I've been a fan of both for a long time, but neither one has done anything else on the level of this game before or since. Nier: Automata is one of the rare examples of a story that could only really be told in a video game. There are elements of the story that I won't spoil, which would not really work in any other medium, literally all the way up to the game's ending credits. Part of the reason is because those elements are also part of the gameplay, so taking one out would also impact the other. The story itself is also excellent in general, dealing with themes such as existence, humanity, the value of life, and many other often rather dark subject matters.

One of the main reasons Nier: Automata is this high on my list, besides the exceptional gameplay, great story, and one of the best video game soundtracks of the last decade, is the sheer emotional impact it had on me. Though there were numerous moments throughout the story that will likely remain with me for a very long time, there is also a specific scene in this game that basically forced me to take a break from the game. Again, I won't spoil it, but that makes Nier: Automata one of exactly two games out of the literal hundreds, if  not thousands at this point, that have had such a profound impact on me that I've had to put down the controller for a while and just reflect on what just happened and try to accept it. That is something special, and makes me simultaneously want to go back and replay the game, as well as never touch it again.

Very few games have ever caught my eye in a way that Okami did when I first saw it. There simply wasn't, and still really aren't, any other games that look like it. The watercolours-in-motion look was entirely its own, and a gorgeous one at that. Obviously, beautiful visuals aren't enough by themselves, but fortunately there's a great game to go along with them. As far as games of its kind go (ones inspired by The Legend of Zelda that is), Okami is easily one of the very best ever made. Outside of the game's beautiful visual style, the true standout element of the game is the Celestial Brush, essentially the ability for the player to draw things on top of the gameplay and make various items pop into existence and cause all kinds of other effect to occur. It's the one thing that truly makes Okami unique. In addition, the setting inspired by Japanese folklore is wonderful, not just in terms of its appearance but also in other aspects such as the game's music.

Of course, the game is not perfect, but the faults it has are relatively small all things considered. It is a very long game for one, perhaps a bit too long. The clearest example of this is how many of the bosses are repeated. If there was an element of challenge to these repeated encounters it wouldn't matter, but the bosses are in a lot of ways akin to puzzles for the player to solve, and once you've beaten a boss once it's literally the exact same thing again. Essentially, it become nothing but a time sink, and makes the final dungeon of the game particularly annoying. Otherwise, the game throws in interesting new locations, characters, and abilities at you frequently enough so that it never gets dull to play. The character voices can also get a bit grating at times, and some other minor aspects may not have aged without issue either, but overall this is still an excellent game. The positives basically far outweigh the negatives here.

I'm going to use this post to say that Okami is currently on sale in the Switch eshop for just $5.  Likely due to the announcement that they are now working on a sequel.  I have the Wii version, but I finally double dipped and picked up the Switch version.

Switch version is best. Those touch screen controls are a dream.
