People forget how bad Sega were when they were still around. Great company and history but don't let nostalgia get in the way of reality.

This.  Sega CD was garbage.  32x was hot garbage.  Saturn was overpriced and extremely difficult from a game development perspective.

Sega dug their own grave in a very shot period of time.

Dreamcast is one of my favorite systems of all time BUT unfortunately, due to its short run and financial misfortunes of Sega at the time, it had a limited library of games. Nowadays I only play dreamcast via emulation and my dreamcast library includes around 70 titles. On the other hand, I own a modded Xbox with a 500 GB hard disc, on which I play original xbox games, transfering over ethernet from my xbox games archive, where I have around 270 games. So, for me Xbox easily wins, even though thanks to its image clarity vs PS2, superb games such as Soul Calibur way back in 1999, and ease of emulation even in cheap retro consoles, DC will always have a special place in my heart.

I would tend to disagree, I'd consider Megadrive, Saturn, and Dreamcast to be quite good systems with some really excellent games, just done it by a lot of poor business decisions.

You can argue that for almost any consoles, the Neo Geo had great games, so did the Atari and Amiga but it's the bad business decisions that costs them their businesses. I enjoyed the Genesis and Dreamcast but Sega just failed to read the market multiple time. Sega also failed to control the 3rd party market, which cost them massively.

That's not what this thread is about though. The topic is which one people like better, not which was more commercially successful.

Sure, You can like Sega over whatever you like. Unfortunately, Sega didn't have the financial backing they needed to stay afloat. For me, I liked Sega, but I don't forget how bad they got. I tried playing Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 and they continue to remind me how bad Sega were at making games. Shenmue was the Dreamcasts only shining light which ironically also killed Sega.

I still find Sega overrated. Having good games, most all consoles can say that. The DC was poor design. Single analog and no dual shoulder buttons. It was poor design. Sega only designed one console well, the Genesis.

Not even the Genesis was well designed. The controller had just 3 buttons, no shoulder buttons or anything, it was just a NES controller with one whole extra button on it (yay), and when SNES created the controller standard we have today, Sega thought that just shoving 3 more face buttons on the controller was a great idea. The Genesis' success was due to great marketing and Sonic being a good game, but mostly due to great marketing.

6 button pad is great as it was closer to SEGA's roots with Arcade games. So fighting games were perfect with 6 buttons. Saturn improved the Genesis 6 button pad and to this day 3rd parties either emulate that pad for fighting games and now we have 3rd parties making the Saturn controller again for both retro and new consoles. One of them is a Saturn pad with twin hall effect joysticks.  I honestly wish the Dreamcast controller had 6 face buttons and 2 analogs. Genesis was the shooter machine or shmups. SNES was not known for that and Toaplan/TecnoSoft and Compile were the best of the best that gen in that genre. Retrobit has been doing professional repros of Toaplan games and right now on Limited Run Games site, you can get a new set of Toaplan games. Don't forget Shining Force. Phantasy Star. Ranger X. MUCHA. Crusade of Centy. Gunstar Heroes. Genesis has a fantastic library but while it had some great RPGs. SNES had more and some of the best ever tho I'd put PSIV up with anything that generation. SNES RPG machine. Genesis Shmup machine.

Xbox had a multi-billion dollar corporation backing it. Sega on the other hand had to sink or swim financially. If Xbox had been spun off from MS as its own company in 2001 Xbox would be dead by the end of the 360 era or before. Sega was in the console market for 18 years on its own two feet.

Microsoft Gaming revenue is 15 billion annually...  so no, that isn't true.  Microsoft Gaming is incredibly profitable and successful.

1st off I'm talking about back in the early 2000's when the Xbox division bled money left and right.

2nd off, of course Xbox makes money now. They bought half of all western devs. Kind of hard to lose money when you own nearly everything.
