Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why do Disk Drives matter?

Would you quit gaming if the industry went full digital?

It is true physical takes up space. So I cleaned up my shelves a bit today, brought a bunch of old games I won't play anymore back to the store and basically got Astrobot for free. The physical edition of Astrobot also comes with a cute poster and installed fast from disc. (Faster than me trying to download 40 GB)

With physical I still have less hesitation to buy a game. You can always return it, with a loss of course, yet better than buying digital and have nothing. But some things, like The Crew, are just garbage now. Servers turned off, game disc worthless. Not a big loss as I bought it second hand for cheap, but now it has no value at all anymore.

So I'll stick to disk drives, more options.

Shouldn't the question be "Why do Disc Drives matter?"

Floppy Disk Drive, Hard Disk Drive... but Compact Disc, Digital Versatile Disc, Blu-ray Disc, Optical Disc...

Erm...  actually Disk is the US English spelling.  Disc is the UK English spelling.  Like color and colour.

As someone in the US I use both lol. Neither is wrong.

Well said. And for games that don't force online updates to download the whole game or for multiplayer features at the start, it makes even more sense.

I bought Star Wars Jedi Survivor physically because it was on sale for even cheaper than it had recently been on PSN. Be that as it may, it's one of the least logical physical game purchases I've made in most other ways. It has a mandatory online download of over 100 GB.

My philosophy tends to be

Xbox 360: Now I can only get physical with the store closure, but I got some retail games digitally.

Switch: Mostly physical for retail games, some exceptions and some digital-only games.

PS3: Digital-only because of a faulty Blu-ray Drive

PS4/PS5: Mostly digital with some physical games.

Xbox One: All-digital so far, but that will change.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 48 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

There seems to be a strong convention to use disc for optical media and disk for magnetic media though, as Wikipedia puts it. Other than that, doesn't seem to matter. That also lines up very well with the way I've seen the word(s) used, and there seems to be notable support for this convention on the internet too. It's probably not wrong per se to use them interchangeably even in technical contexts, but it is against the convention recognized by many. Make of that what you will...

My steam library is like 10 games. Yep, that is how much I give a shit about digital media. At least with GOG you can download the installers I guess.

Cool story. Now can you provide substance to why it matters?

Google

"Most of what you need to remember about disk and disc is the following: disk is the preferred spelling in American English, and it's also the spelling used for computer-related objects, such as a hard disk. Disc is the preferred spelling in British English, and it's also the spelling used for devices carrying sound."

Ps5 pro, disk drive optional. I still think the ps6 is digital only. I believe physical games will be dead by the switch 3.

Coin toss on PS6 not having at least the add-on disc drive. Switch 3, we'll have to see. Japan is Nintendo's homeland and one of their biggest markets not only as a whole but for an individual country and Japanese gamers still flock to physical games.

Perhaps even by the time Switch 3 releases, that trend will change a lot in Japan or Nintendo won't care enough anymore to support physical games.
