Yikes, source?

If true, that's going to hurt, not just by discouraging Japanese buyers, but by making exports to China and other markets less worthwhile. Seems they have decided to prioritise profits margins over growing their install base.

Aren't Chinese PS5s Region locked? I heard that people in China import so they can play any game and not just the ones officially released in China.

Probably has to do with the high volatility of the Yen right now.

Back in 2020 a US$ gave you about 100 to 110 yen, now it's more like 145 yen and a couple weeks ago it was 160 yen, with pretty wild fluctuations since 2022, where it was still at 115 yen to the dollar until March when the fluctuations started.

Due to this, I expect Nintendo and Microsoft to also increase their prices - or at least don't do promotions as with the current volatility prices are pretty hard to predict.

Nintendo Japan does a lot of business directly in USD instead of Yen.  They are not as subject to Yen fluctuations as Sony is.  Don't forget, Sony Interactive Entertainment (the home of PlayStation) is actually a US company now. However, the measure that Nintendo took for the impact it was affected by was simply to not employ price cuts.  This allowed them to keep margins (as their BoM dropped over time) so no need for price increases.

Further, they have a whole new console that can be used to absorb the prices.  Can't really say they increased a price when they start the price high enough to reflect the currency devaluation to begin with.

To the privileged, equality feels like oppression.

I mean not employing price cuts with the Switch, despite the highly volatile Yen currently is the price cut measure people were speaking off there.

Same with worldwide prices increasing in some cases.
It prolly is a reason why the system still does insanely well that far into it's lifespan in Japan.
