Depends.  I voted 10 minutes though.

Action game I know little about - Just a few minutes.  Arcade games, action games in a compilation, cheap GameStop game in a Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal, a bundle of games on Ebay, etc....  I give these games just a few minutes each.  If they aren't fun, then move on.  An action game needs to be fun in the first few minutes IMO or it just isn't worth playing.

Action game with great reviews and/or in a series I like - I'll give it at least a couple of hours.  I played RDR2 somewhere in the 2-4 hour range and I was still in the tutorial.  The tutorial is not fun either, while the BotW tutorial is actually fun.  F U RDR2.

Turn based RPGs - Multiply the times by about 10.  Turn based RPGs can take a while before they are fun, so I'll give them more time.  (Although there are turn based RPGs which start being fun during the first few minutes.)

Other genres like strategy games or action RPGs fall somewhere in between.

What if the game never gets good? I can say from my own personal experience, I've wasted too much money in my life on buying a game on blind faith.

So, to all the game developers out there, I know you can hear me, and guess what, you will never rip me off again. I don't give a shit any more about your problems - more lay offs and loss of revenue is your problem because your game SUCKS !!!!

Give me a demo, and let me try your game without any money involved, if I like it, I will gladly fork over my hard earned money to play it again, otherwise, I have no sympathy for your line of work.

There is so much content out there now to help research that this shouldn't really be happening to you or at least not often. You should easily be able to tell down to what price of a sale you want to wait for based on Internet reception if you research well enough..

I'm referring to the time before the Internet existed.  Back then, we only had magazine reviews to go by (I subscribed to EGM). That was a great mag, but they could only review a few games each month.

I realise now this is a silly question, it's a spectrum from 10 minutes to 10 hours based on the genre you're playing and beyond even 10 hours. Many RPG's have tutorial based stuff going after 10 hours but you're likely going to know if the game is for you or not at it's core if you're familiar with the genre, shortening that time. I gave Dark Souls 2, 20 or 30 hours even though I somewhat enjoyed that. I've given Wrath of the Righteous 30 hours yet only gotten into the games campaign at 10 hours and again enjoyed my time so I'm actually in the camp of as long as it takes and I didn't even realise it until just now. I've given Racers dozens of hours to upon up and allow for certain sports I want to play the most lime Rally cross in Dirt games and most hardcore of all I spent one month, a month or five or six weeks of no lifing and rushing Final Fantasy 14 online to reach the first expansion (I was in a rut in life) where the game apparently got good and it did. I had bits of fun along the way but I certainly wouldn't say it was an excellent experience and really sluggish innparts, I thought about quitting a lot but people kept saying press on, only then did I start getting really addicted to the game in the MMORPG hard drug level addiction.
Man, I completely blocked all that out when I made this thread, the above makes 2 hours look like the blink of an eye.

Depends on the game. Straight to digital games can be done for me in just a few minutes. They have to catch my attention like Trine or Shovel Knight, or I will turn it off and never play again. Especially since these digital titles are usually so cheap. I know that these days many games are digital only, but I think you all know what I mean.

As for a traditional game you buy in the store, big 40 to 70 dollar title, I will put in about an hour or so, if I see some sort of light at the end of the tunnel maybe longer. Some games the training mode is annoyingly long, so again, it depends.

I usually give a game 2 hours. Primarily because that’s the refund limit on Steam lol. That’s typically a good amount of time to figure if I’m going to like a game or not.

Yeah that is usually what I do. If I don't enjoy a game on Steam within 2 hours I end up refunding it. Now if a game is on Game Pass I don't have to worry about the 2 hour limit to refund.

Depends on the type of game, if it's an established series I trust, and to an extent if I paid for the game or someone else did.

I could be willing endure tens of hours of average, if I think there's a good possibility of it becoming good or great later.
Final Fantasy 13 comes to mind. It took about 40 hours for me to really enjoy the gameplay. But it was Final Fantasy. Of course I had to see it through.

Nowadays my faith in the brand isn't as strong, mainly due to FF13. Which is probably the main reason why I still haven't played FF15, along with hearing mixed impressions of that one.

On the other hand I played through all of God of War (2018) due to all the positive talk about it, despite the highs and lows averaging out for me. I ended up finishing it, but my feelings towards it didn't change. I loved the banter between Kratos, Atreus and Mimir. The boss battles and set pieces. But not the regular combat and enemies. And I thought the main story ended just as it started getting really interesting.

I enjoyed Ragnarok more though. But I only played halfway through it. I might go back to it at some point. (Probably not, knowing me)

I really wish I could get into Ragnorok, there's a game I gave a dozen hours to but quit cause I was not enjoying my time. The Atreus section was a slap in the face to my time from the developers so differing from you I really enjoyed GOW 18.

Yeah, I realise there is a spectrum here. I just put 4 or 5 hours into Lo Long Fallen Dynasty to see if it gets good, thinking I'd surely quit and the youtubers I listened to were wrong but alas, the game turned out to become really good. My OT is a flawed topic and the poll should allow for times well over 10 hours cause there are games and genres that take that long like MMO's. Ff14 could take a player dozen of hours to reach a point where they're having actual fun.
