Depends on the type of game, if it's an established series I trust, and to an extent if I paid for the game or someone else did.

I could be willing endure tens of hours of average, if I think there's a good possibility of it becoming good or great later.
Final Fantasy 13 comes to mind. It took about 40 hours for me to really enjoy the gameplay. But it was Final Fantasy. Of course I had to see it through.

Nowadays my faith in the brand isn't as strong, mainly due to FF13. Which is probably the main reason why I still haven't played FF15, along with hearing mixed impressions of that one.

On the other hand I played through all of God of War (2018) due to all the positive talk about it, despite the highs and lows averaging out for me. I ended up finishing it, but my feelings towards it didn't change. I loved the banter between Kratos, Atreus and Mimir. The boss battles and set pieces. But not the regular combat and enemies. And I thought the main story ended just as it started getting really interesting.

I enjoyed Ragnarok more though. But I only played halfway through it. I might go back to it at some point. (Probably not, knowing me)

I really wish I could get into Ragnorok, there's a game I gave a dozen hours to but quit cause I was not enjoying my time. The Atreus section was a slap in the face to my time from the developers so differing from you I really enjoyed GOW 18.
