I have a bit of an interest in statistics as I'm sure I'm not the only one here on the site and for whatever reason I recently had an idea to combine critic and user scores across different sites to find the average and see which games are most highly regarded "across the board". So I did, and I figured I might as well share my "findings".

While I usually prefer OpenCritic I choose Metacritic for the critic scores in this case since it goes way further back and for games that couldn't be found on there (SNES or earlier) I used GameRankings. For user scores I've used two different sites because I feel they outweight each other's biases nicely, GameFAQs is an old school site with a console preference while HowLongToBeat is a modern site with a slight PC preference.

I've generally gone with the highest rated version of each game (including GOTY editions or remasters) on each site unless it was based on significantly less votes. The same goes for expansions that are essentially synonymous with the main game (StarCraft: Brood War or Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne).

A fairly predictable top 2 perhaps, but I think there are some interesting results beyond that. Even just the top 10 feels a bit more varied than when it comes down to popularity contests. And though they might come with asterixes attached, two fairly obscure titles (The House in Fata Morgana and Gothic II: Night of the Raven) were highly regarded enough across all three sites to make it to the top 50.

Obviously this isn't any sort of definitive list, there could be lots of ways to do it. You could have chosen to weigh critics at 50 % or to use different sites, but figured it was still an interesting little experiment as is.

Interesting results. I'd say about 20% of the games in the top 50 are both games I've played and think are great. Another 40% I haven't played, and the last 40% I've played but are highly overrated. I guess there is no accounting for taste.

If I had to choose which game is the objectively best game ever made, I would say Chrono Trigger (even though it's not in my top 10 favorite games, oddly enough). Also, no offense to Persona 5, but how is it that high? It's a great game and all, but it's not top 10 of all time.

It looks like I'm not alone on the web for thinking Breath of the Wild is about a 9.5 and Tears of the Kingdom is about a 9-9.25. Even still, I'm surprised there 1.7 points separating the two. I have to play The House in Fata Morgana since I've played plenty of meh to good visual novels and apparently Fata Morgana is the best of the best.
Of the games on the list, Super Mario Odyssey is my favorite. My favorite game overall is Stardew Valley.

Fun idea, interesting result.

Ocarina of Time is the deserving winner. I'd even say, at 99 Metacritic, it's still underrated.

As a fan of Persona 5, I personally get it. It's the JRPG dream as long as you have the patience, excellent on all parameters: story, gameplay, music, style. If Tales of Symphonia didn't have a special place in my heart, Persona 5 would probably be my favorite JRPG.
