And that's putting it mildly.

Xbox 360 Sales (Jan-May 2013) = 2.18m
Xbox One sales (Jan-May 2020) = 2.09m
Xbox Series Sales (Jan-May 2025) = 1.13m

The Xbox One in the year it was replaced was selling almost double what the Xbox Series is doing this year, which itself wasn't a sales success.

I agree with you, MS can't wait till 2027/2028 to launch their next console and keep the Series running. 2024 sales were already a record low for the full year sales of a current xbox console, 2025 will again be Xbox's worst on record. If the Series isn't discontinued by the end of 2026 sales will be so low it might as well be.

The next Xbox consoles are going to be very expensive. More than what most casual gamers are going to stomach. They need to continue the Xbox series consoles sales. Xbox Ones were still getting games 4 years later. Series consoles will be powerful enough to run next gen games minus all the bells and whistles.

I mean we know the year on year declines Xbox is having, you don't continue to make hardware that is seeing 40%-50% year on year declines with already low numbers. For example; Xbox this year is selling considerably less than Switch 1, and that is an older console that was on its way out this year. And the Switch numbers were so low for Nintendo that they needed a replacement on the market as quickly as possible this year, while Xbox series X/S could only dream about reaching the very low Switch 1 sales this year.

Switch 1 is getting discontinued because it isn't powerful enough to run any new third party games minus indie games. Microsoft just needs to drop the xbox price instead of raising them. Nobody wants to buy a 700 dollar console.

The problem with this response is that it assumes MS still cares about selling hardware as a competitor in the console space. They might produce hardware but if it they don't care about competing it doesn't matter when XBSS/X are discontinued and it also doesn't matter when/if they launch the next hardware. It will just be it's own thing that's not designed to compete with anything so it won't be pitted against any other devices.

Edit - I quoted the wrong post but my point still stands.

Switch is not discontinued and won't be for a while. Nintendo has first-party stuff coming out for it in 2026. It's still selling well.

Lower production volume means higher prices. MS won't drop the XBox price, they just raised them...

MS would have to redesign the Series S to make a much cheaper to produce smaller model to be able to lower the price. Yet without the expected volume to sell, the R&D costs won't be recouped and it will still be a loss. Plus the whole slim console business model doesn't work anymore with high inflation, at best a slim model would be closer to the original launch price :/

Series S launched at $299, currently $379.

The decision to discontinue a console is not based on power, but on sales. The PS2 lived on throughout the entire PS3 generation, and that thing was already underpowered in its own generation.

100%

Similar with Atari 2600. Started Production in 1977 and discontinued in 1992.

Wrong. Xbox is still profitable even if it doesn't sell as much as Playstation / Nintendo. Microsoft wants to keep Xbox around because if they went full third party and abandon Xbox / console market, Playstation will have all the leverage. That situation will be a nightmare for Microsoft. Xbox keeps playstation in check so they won't pull another PS3.

Next Xbox will more than likely have a feature where you can boot windows gaming OS to play steam games. However, I can imagine it being locked behind a pay wall. Also, Microsoft doesn't want to lose console only games like GTA and Sports games even if it is timed exclusive.

Yep; the Famicom was produced until 2003, by which time it was three generations out of date. The 3DS was produced until 2020, despite being close in power to with released around 1998-2001.

Switch 1 won't be discontinued any time soon, and is still getting non-indie third party titles like Sonic Racing Crossworlds, Little Nightmares III, Atelier Resleriana, Professor Layton, etc.

This poll should be reset if possible.
94 votes in favor of 40 million and up, 84 against.
With Series X/S cratering and the next Xbox likely coming out 2027 or before it's not looking good.
