The problem with this response is that it assumes MS still cares about selling hardware as a competitor in the console space. They might produce hardware but if it they don't care about competing it doesn't matter when XBSS/X are discontinued and it also doesn't matter when/if they launch the next hardware. It will just be it's own thing that's not designed to compete with anything so it won't be pitted against any other devices. Edit - I quoted the wrong post but my point still stands. |
Wrong. Xbox is still profitable even if it doesn't sell as much as Playstation / Nintendo. Microsoft wants to keep Xbox around because if they went full third party and abandon Xbox / console market, Playstation will have all the leverage. That situation will be a nightmare for Microsoft. Xbox keeps playstation in check so they won't pull another PS3.
Next Xbox will more than likely have a feature where you can boot windows gaming OS to play steam games. However, I can imagine it being locked behind a pay wall. Also, Microsoft doesn't want to lose console only games like GTA and Sports games even if it is timed exclusive.
